Erm.... isn't it obvious?? The focal length is different. And if you are referring to Canon, they don't make a 20mm f/1.8.

Have you tried 24 f1.4? You might fall in love with it.

What do you mean the effect is same? They are entirely different focal lengths, all with different maximum aperture.

a 28mm 1.8 on a 400D = is really about 45mm= moderate, standard, can handhold indoors w/o flash, can use on full frame.
a 50mm 1.4-1.8 on a 400D = is really about 80mm= not very wide, pretty tight, borderline handheld indoors unless you bump up ISO and grain, can use on full frame. 10-22 on a 400D = wide, but slow, probably cannot handhold indoors unless you lug a flash along or it is very very VERY well lit, and cannot use on a full frame. as discussed in private messages i have the 28mm 1.8 and it is great indoors w/o flash. even though i am selling it, i am not trying to get you to buy it. the point of this exercise is to understand what each lens is capable of and how you can/cannot use it so that we all have a "happyshot" remember, if you are using a 400D (i think) your camera is a 1.6 crop meaning whatever lens you put on, you must multiply that by 1.6 and that will give you your true focal length. if you are looking at the 10-22 and have a flash, I would rather go for the 17-40mm 4.0 L. It starts out roughly in the middle of the focal length of the 10-22mm, you get a bit zoom on it, the quality is better (IMHO) and if you upgrade camera bodies, you in effect have the same focal distance as a 10-22 on a 400D. a 10-22 on a 400D distance wise is really a 16-35mm lens... hmmmm, doesn't canon also make a 16-35 ![]() just know what you want to use the lens for. 10-22 is not a low-light lens 17-40mm is not a low-light lens 50mm 1.4 and 28mm 1.8 are both low-light lenses. they let in more light in darker places allowing for higher shutter speeds to freeze motion and take away handshake. hope this helps, happy shooting |

Thanks, bought the 10-22 for landscape and F1.4 for portraits. The 24mm F2.8 is just testing...

consider also that other than FOV and Angle of view and focal lengths...
Lenses at carry a specific perspective as well, I personally dislike the 20mm perspective given to pictures and prefer 24mm one. this also has to do with the characteristic of that particular lens and the distortion it has. hope thats one more factor you want to look at. and yes it carries this trait on to pictures from cropped sensors. |
