    Photoshop, Lightroom and fireworks.

Fireworks engine is better than Photoshop in compressing images for web-use.

    GIMP for me!
    Firstly, it's FREEEEE!!!
and it does just about everything i need (as a beginner hobbyist) in a photo editing program.

I have no doubt that if I were a professional, GIMP would somehow limit my editing abilities.

I think the categories are not right.

GIMP and Photoshop belong primarily to the Create & Edit category.
Lightroom goes to the Edit category.

Photoshop has the pen tool to do that.

But I always use Illustrator to do anything that's nothing to do with editing the photo itself.

well simply put lightrooom is like a super improved version of adobe bridge for handling batches of photos and improved version of elements tied together..
but if u do only a few photos and heavy photoshop
then lightroom doesn't work for it..
its more like a workflow solution ..

    Mainly use Paint.NET.
    Pros :

    1. Free
    2. Simple enough to use as is
    3. I started out with it and find no use to 'upgrade'
    4. Good enough for my '1min PP' (ie. levels, curves, contrast, crop, B/W)
    5. Add plug-ins (again free) and it really quite powerful

    Cons:
    1. No good scissors tool (but then I don't want to spend too much time doing this anyway)
    2. Less power layer (esp. no layer mask AFAIK)
    3. Many tutorials will refer to Photoshop techniques, which will be hard/cannot be applied using Paint.net (main source of techniques will be fro mthe Paint.Net forums)

Sure you can. Use the Mogrify Plugin: http://timothyarmes.com/lr2mogrify.php
Lot's of options to insert into the picture or create a frame where you can place the caption into.
