Depending on what you want to shoot and your budget.
For products - Minolta/Sony 50mm / Sigma 70mm. For flowers & insect - Minolta/Sony 50mm / Sigma 70mm / Tamron 90mm / Minolta/Sony 100mm / Sigma 105mm For butterflies - Sigma/Tamron 180mm I think someone is selling a 100mm in the B&S now, you can do a search.

I also see someone selling a 50mm macro if I'm not mistaken?
The Sigma 70-300mm DG APO is not a true macro lens. It is a zoom lens with macro function, it can produce images that are at 1:2 magnification ratio. The 50/100mm lenses can do 1:1.

For general use, I would suggest the Sigma 70mm or the Tamron 90mm.

Telephoto Macro not 1:1 ratio. So call not a true macro lens.

yup, as the bros have mentioned, the 1:1 magnification and also the shapness of the Macro lens. That's why most people do not use macro lenses for portrait shoots.

It's not that the picture quality is affected... it's just that a macro lens is designed to be very sharp and you can get the very small subject to fill the frame as you can go very close... for the 70-300, you will need to crop extensively to get close to the macros posted on the "Share your SONY photos" thread. And even those appear to be already cropped when shot with a macro lens...

True macro lens 1:1 means an object 1mm in real life is reproduced 1mm on the sensor. Anything < 1:1 (ie: 1:2) means an object is bigger in real life. Anything > 1:1 (ie: 4:3) means object is bigger on the sensor. Is this correct? |
