They expect people to buy Vista compatible software for ALL of our applications and retraining the staff all over again?
    What? are they kidding?

A PC magazine said Vista overhead is 3GB. It is capable of 64 bit. (read that MS will send you that version if you buy a retail i.e. non-OEM version)

But Windows 7 may come out and who knows may be compatible with XP software.

so, let's just try to help TS. First, can you give more infomation of what you see? when you say cannot start, any particular error messages like "missing file" or "cannot mount partition" etcetc etc or really totally blnk screen with no logo, no words, no bios info?

btw, i just updated my vista not too long ago. totally no probs. sometimes dun quite get why people hate vista so much when my whole family is using it quite smoothly. but i do agree in an office network, upgrading to vista might cause some(or many) issues to surface.
Actually, none of us actually hate Vista. We actually tried it, test it and hate it. Why purchase a software which causes so much problems. It's not that we do not want to help but how can we help when there is a problem within the software itself.

I am glad to hear you do not have an issues with VISTA....but a majority of us do. We HAVE to rely on OS to make the computer functional but when the TS have such problems, it's best to use something which has a better reliability than gives him more problems.

As for switching to MAC, it's again up to the invidual to switch camp. It's after all a suggestion for his future needs. I see no wrong in introducing a new OS to him at all. I for one use 3 platforms Mac, XP 64bit and problem free LINUX.

I am one of a BETA user on VISTA when it first launch years back. At first it was quite impressive but as I go along testing VISTA, it has so many compatibility problems with other softwares. Trust me on this, it's no plain sailing if you do encounter a problem with VISTA. It's worst than XP giving you problem.

    OK heres the latest:

Spent 30 mins on the phone with MS tech support and he was not able to salvage the old installation (couldn't even boot in safe mode). In the end had to do a fresh install but thankfully my data was not deleted. The old install was saved to a directory called windows.old.

Have to spend the rest of the weekend re-installing drivers and apps and configuring. Sighz. Now where did I put those disks.....

Thanks to all those who tried to help!

PS. BTW the size of the old windows directory (just system files w/o user and program files) is 7GB!! Is that a large footprint or what?!

Glad that you solve some issues and lucky your old data is still around.

Always use your computer system only for current work. Those old but important datas should be place in a safe place like DVD/BR/External HDD lar.

Vista takes up a big chunk of your HDD and most of it is not that important which you hardly ever use.

What you can do is to Partition about 20GB of your 300GB HDD for your main system (programs only but no data) and the rest in another partition. So if there is a failure in your OS, you can reinstall without worrying too much on losing your valuable data which is still intact.

The only time you can't recover any data is when your HDD is dead.

specialists can extract important data from a dead hard disk.
    dunno how they do it.
that is why "specialist' and of course you pay dearly for it.

    ..................

why some people like Vista and got no problems and some don't like
because we all got different systems and vastly different software in our PCs
    also different hardware configuration
different major usage of the PC - some video edit, some photoshopping, etc...

if a person likes it, good for him/her.

    I don't want to try.
Got problem with ONE software application is headache enough
imagine most/all your existing software clashes/ do not work with the new OS

when you pay good hard earned money, you are supposed to get a trouble free product, not one that gives you many problems, have to patch here patch there, debug here debug there, leave messages on forums to find out from others (the undocumented secret) how to use the darn thing properly with another software application....

If the HDD is able to be recognized as a "Drive" in Windows, there're always software avail to recover the data.

If the HDD is totally dead (can't be recognized). You have to bring it to those specialized dust-free workshop to replace the disk with another housing. Which cost a bomb unless you have really worth rescuring data inside.

Ok...Vista isn't suck actually. The "SUCK" comments are always come from a few reasons:
    1. One only has a "compatible" PC instead of an ideal config PC
    2. Mis-use with Software
    3. Unable to config Windows to bring out its full potential (turning off some useless functions)
    4. Never patch the system (yes, there're always flaws in OS, even MAC and Linux)

Reason to say MAC is good or Linux is good:
    1. Seldom got attack (which doesn't mean it will never happen)
    2. Minimum virus spreading (and it also doesn't mean there won't be more and doesn't mean NO antivirus required)
    3. Ratio of current user (more users = more problem found. That's for sure)

For me, Vista is NOT my favourite for the time being. It will one day. Just like XP during the time before SP2. It takes time for an OS to fully reliable. Just the time matters. In most cases, I would rather like Windows for the usable software and also, supporting and rescuring software available. It's very costly and time consuming to rescure a MAC or a Linux. Not unless you have specialized repairing experience.

True that you can recover data if your HDD is corrupted. When it's totally dead we still can recover data but it will cost so much that you can buy a few top of the line PCs. I only know one specialist who does all this data recovery but from what I heard most of the time when there is a client who gives a dead HDD for him to recover, usually the data is worth 10 times more than his fees.

So at the end of the day, the best is to back up your precious data on at least 2 HDD. For me I am a little kiasu but I back-up my entire data (1TB) every 3 months on 2 Fresh HDD. Keep this data on my Chubb safe.
