My two cents' worth for the TS as a newbie...

If I were to start all over again, the most important factor I would consider is the first-party lens selection for a brand. Each camera maker has its own line-up and each offers different types of lenses for different purposes and users.

(The reason for looking at first party lenses for comparison is simply because there is better customer service support and it also ensures future camera compatibility and promises higher QC in general.)

Just to give an example, Canon has two IS lenses in the 70-200mm range: 70-200/f2.8 and 70-200/f4 both of which have good build quality and IQ. The difference is the speed and more noticeably, perhaps, the difference in price tag. For Nikon users who want to get a Nikkor 70-200 with VR, there is only one option, the 70-200/f2.8 which is comparable to the Canon in terms of performance and price, according to online reviews.

Another example is that Nikon has a 18-200mm VR lens which is very popular with people who want a one-lens solution. Canon has yet to release a similar offering.

For this reason, I would actually advise a newbie to look at Pentax because they have some really nice prime lenses in the "Limited" series. The K200 and K20 cameras seem to be highly competent offerings too.

I do think differences like this are quite subtle but they may matter to some.

But of course I shall repeat the same advice dished out by the other posters so far because it is so true. Don't decide by just looking at the brand name. Go feel the cameras for yourself, make a decision (having good friends who use the same brand helps, as you can borrow lenses from them next time) and never look back! That was how I chose my D40X to mark my foray into "serious" photography.

    Good luck

    Eh, minor correction.

Canon has four 70-200 lenses, all with varying price tags: f/4, f/4 IS, f/2.8 and f/2.8 IS
Nikon has two 70-200 lenses (so to speak): the 80-200 f/2.8, and the 70-200 f/2.8 VR

Sorry everyone, I meant to say Canon has two IS lenses in the 70-200 range while Nikon "only" has one VR version. I didn't mean to confuse anyone. I am aware that Canon has four 70-200 lenses in total, including non-IS ones.

I shall edit my previous post to reflect this. Sorry once again.

Can't you see that in my first post in this thread, I was asking? Flooded with question mark?

Well, I (and we all know that ) in the end of the day, it is the man who is behind the viewfinder who takes great pictures. But as I have mentioned, we are choosing system. And if we do not like the system after we have made our first purchase, changing a system does cost a bomb.

I was asking for replies, not to state any fact. If based on your assumption, if it is incorrect information, then "don't say", I do not know how the education system is going to work? Even in doing research--one newly established hypothesis will be thrown in just seconds.

First, let me repeat what all Gurus said that the differences become so small and it is quite difficult to differentiate sometime.
In order to support my sayings, I have to provide some proofs:

I am not quoting anybody, but just to support my sayings

In fact there are so many other good brands, not only this 2, unless you're going for top model in future.
I would say Sony is the new star. Inherited from Minolta, the creator of AF, TTL and many other foundation systems today, and with good resources and now serious in DSLR market. You can consider.
Sony lenses can be relatively expensive, CZ lens is top class, minolta lens is cheaper everywhere, so you can go high or low, still with at least basic quality.

List of the things D2x went through in USA
    • Shooting in a dust storm
    • Shooting in the downwash of a Huey's downwash (No time to wait for chopper to go to higher altitude, time was crtical, once jump from chopper shutter started clicking)
    • Drank some orange juice by a pissed actor
    • Drank some jet fuel (not sure if it was gasoline) meant for the chopper
    • Then had to endure a bath for 15min to clear the fuel off the body
    • Endured a snowstorm shoot, viewfinder got snow inside, but when snow melted, no water seeped into prism

    Canon Lens Can Mount Nikon?

And to be honest, I would move this thread to the newbie thread to get a fairer view of the different system.

As the saying goes, "Canon is the best camera made by an Engineer, Nikon is the best camera made by a Photographer"

The actual appearance of the image between these two cameras is also subtly different, the image processing engines delivering interestingly different renditions of fine detail, most notable are some of the EOS-1D's odd pixel artifacts around black detail or where there would otherwise be visible moire. The D2H delivers a cleaner and more 'film like' look to the image. Noise levels are slightly higher in the D2H image.
Even though it is a very old comparison. But I do notice there is a trend. Therefore I prefer to study from the very beginning for older models. Most newer models will inherit the "style" or "trend".

At least these are what I found out. Most of my "sweeping statement" were inspired by those many many websites. Can to tell me which one is correct and which one is misinformation, incorrect information?

Ok... I can see that there has been some sort of misunderstanding about james' intention in his initial post. It's probably due to the way you phrase your sentences, which led to the misunderstanding in the first place. I was mistaken too. Since your seemed to be replying to the TS's queries, it seemed to me like you were trying to offer information.

You have to admit though, that in 1 of your posts, you made a statement like "canon has more third party lenses...." which lacked any supporting information. So this is considered misleading information.

Finally, someone uderstands my intention. Maybe I should take some england courses. Sorry the way I put it creates so much misunderstandings. Just happened to find the answers for the exact question, that is why I posted tried to find some answers. Then get involved.

Well, I think I better go out there to learn to be a photographer rather than become an engineer here.

As a suggestion for future posts when you want to ASK a question, try not to write
"Canon has more third party lens options. Nikon only can use Nikkor. Is that true?"
If you forget the last sentence, it will sound like you're making a statement.

    Maybe you can re-phrase into
"In terms of third party lens options, how does Canon and Nikon compare?"

it's funny, or rather, "interesting" that some are making comparison between one brand to another with sources from sites that obviously favours or dedicated for one of the brand
