Dunno for Nikon, but, Canon TC is preferred for Canon lens.

Yes, TC will reduce your IQ, esp. for zooms.

I have tried the Nikon TC 14EII and it retains pretty good sharpness. I have heard good reviews of 1.7x as well ( never tried before ) .

But softness on my TC 20EII becomes more obvious on my 70-200mm, and of course AF becomes less snappy.

I have no experience with 3rd party.

If you are having the non-AFS version, the Nikon TC is a no-no.

You have to make do with 3rd party TCs such as the Kenko Pro 300 DG series.

I have the 80-200mm AFD with Kenko 1.4x DG. I dun see any IQ degrade with it, but the AF will be slightly slower.

Go to a pawn shop and buy a longer lens. I have never been truly satisfied with a tele-converter. You are adding glass to glass that has not been matched, no matter what they say.
