Default Diff between 420EX & 380EX?

Also, what are the prices? I'm just looking for a simple flash to go with a D30.

Both can have E-TTL on the D30. Main difference is the 380EX cannot swivel.

They are more or less same except that 420EX is a newer flash released along with EOS 3. Both support ETTL and will work with your D-30.. The main differences are -

----------------------------------------------------------------
420EX 380EX
----------------------------------------------------------------
MAX GN 42@105 38@105
GN@50mm 34 32
Head Type Tilt & Swivel Tilt Only
Tilt Level 0/+90deg 0/+90deg
Swivel Level 270deg Not Supported
Weight 300gm 270gm
Wireless ETTL Yes Not Supported
FEL Yes Not Supported
---------------------------------------------------------------------

The remaining features are exactly similar except for the price. In case you dont really do night/flash photography a 380EX will suffice.. However I will advise you to get a 420EX if you can afford. I currently use a 380EX and am planning to upgrade..

hope that helps... cheers

If your budget permits, I suggest that you buy the 420EX or even 550EX. IMHO, Good flash means a lot for photograhy. But then, 380EX is not bad at all.

Hi thoa_rs, congrats on getting your new D30, its a fine cam.

I'd recommend the 420EX over the 380EX mainly because it can swivel (380EX cannot), has a slightly higher power output and supports E-TTL.

Happy snapping!

True, but you can find in used market for a fairly good price, almost half of 420EX..

Another important thing to note...the 380EX does not support wireless E-TTL, nor can it be used as a slave flash in the wireless flash setup.

Default i'd say go for the 380ex

i have a 380 ex, main reason why i got this was becoz i cannot justify paying so much for a flash!! (420ex)

so far, comparing with my friends 420,

my 380 is just fine!

main gripe is that i cannot swivel to bounce off the ceiling when taking portrait shots..

and i have no use for the wireless trigger slave function... after all i dun really shoot studio shots....

stregth of flash is almost the same as 420.. no big diff for me..

at less than 1/2 the price of the 420ex, i think 380ex is excellent...

with the cash i saved, might even get a hot shoe cable to use the flash "off" camera... as well as omni bounce + some nice bounce cards..

that would totally eliminate the need for a swivel head, and an "off camera" flash would be even more flexible than any swivel head!

look around for 2nd hand 380ex... coz they dun sell them anymore
i got mine 2nd hand as well...

wait a minute, i believe that i've read that all of canon's digital slr's only work in ettl mode and nothing else - so apparently only the 420ex and the 550ex can be used. 380ex, i'm not too sure...

The Canon dSLRs, to the best of my knowledge, are compatible with all ex series flash....go figure.

for me 380ex, u can either ETTL or control the flash manually...
u have to change the settings though...(for modes P, AV, TV nightmode etc)

if ur in Manual mode, the flash is TOTALLY manual though.. so u gotta control flash output thru the menu...
