Hey guys
i'm trying to get a 2nd hand D80 from the forum and this person is selling me a 55-200mm lens instead of kit lens together with the D80 Body Is it worth it? I'm a beginner.. or should i stick with the normal kit lens? Thanks in advance! |

I would suggest get the 18-135 instead. With this lens, you will have more flexibility and you can know what is the focal range you would like to shoot with or comfortable with before your next upgrade. I started off with this lens too.
![]() 55-200 worth or not, i am not sure, never use before. But personally dun feel this range is good for a new starter. BBB! ![]() ![]()

I'm using a 18-135 on a D300 (its not a kit, but i bought it seperately).
I would second the idea that you should get the 18-135. Cause a 55-200mm is way too "long" for normal daily use. Even on a full-frame D3, 55mm is still too "long" for most uses, not to say on a D80 or any other DX...a 55mm is equivalent of 80+mm...a telephoto lens! You'll feel absolutely stupid taking photos for your friends or anything nearby...cause you gotta run backwards and shout to your friends just to take a group photo...u'll look absolutely silly. The 135mm is more than "long" enough for 90% of the time, while the 18mm will guarantee u're wide enough to shoot most things.... |

I would also think an 18-135mm is a good starting lens for you, giving you a good mix of wide angle at one end to a fair bit of telephoto on the other end to experiment and learn from.
Start off with the 18-135 and learn and grow from there. You might not need the 200mm end anyway. I started learning with an 18-135mm too! Ryan Last edited by giantcanopy; 8th June 2008 at 10:16 PM. |

![]() ![]() Haha, but to winzee, the kit can do a lot of good stuff really~ And since you started this thread asking the question of whether 55-200 is worth it, i suppose, deep in yourself, you find the 18-135 is a better catch. Follow your ![]()

55-200 vr is good no doubt. i see it as a cheap and very value for $ telephoto. but i do forsee u need to get a "wider" lens to couple with this one (e.g. 18-70 or 18-55). if the offer is gd, y not? if i rem correct, 55-200 vr 2nd hand price is abt 300-350, depending on condition and warranty. do the sums, and u will know if it is worth it.
if u want only one lens, then 18-135 is the answer, since it covers most of the range a "normal" person wants.
