very nice with the 1st and the last most appealing...

the 1st still the best coz the exposure and framing just gives a very good sense of speed and direction of force.. adrenaline pumping..

nice work Jeff! must have like exhausted so many shots to get these

Just a little nit on the last pic, try PSing the white tape that's across the pic, will be better use of neg space.

Just my 2cts!

A slight nit Jeff,

Posting too many images of the same concept together tends to diminish the impact. It might be better to spread them out or find some other shots from alternative angles to back them up.

Looks better as a series that way.

2 cents.

A good attempt for your first try..

The first picture wold probably be more pleasing because the motion was diagonal.

What's the meaning of panning? Is it taking pictures with blurred background? How is panning done then, through shutter speed and aperture settings?

Second set 1st one is an interesting angle and composition.

ordinaryless:
Panning is when you use the camera to follow through the motion of the subject and snapping. Doing so would give a blurred background in the direction of the motion. Thus, giving a sense of speed. This contrast with high speed photography where the motion is frozen in time.

Try this trick thought to me by Sulhan for a simple test in panning.
1) Stretch out left hand palms up back of the hand facing you.
2) Aim camera with right hand at the back of left hand. Meaning you are shooting the left hand.
3) Rotate waist to move the left hand, say left to right.
4) Right hand follow motion and snap.
You should get a similar panning effect where the left backhand is sharp and focused while the background is blurred.

Oh, just remembered he did an article on this over here:
http://www.clubsnap.org/display.php?...an/panning.htm
And that was with a humble S10.

Understood.

Btw, did you attempt to use rear-curtain sync together with your pans?

Your first shot seems to suggest you used front curtain sync. Am I seeing it correctly?

1/30 explains the blurry 1st shot which in some way works depending on your taste. Probably pan speed not the same as the rider. Higher shutter speed while panning would give sharper subject and still can get the motion blur background. Depending on taste and purpose.

Zestorer:
Do not think rear/front curtain sync matters in this case. Of course, I could be wrong. Anyone wanna offer some advice??

Actually I perceived what seems to be motion blur in FRONT of the subject, that was why I assumed it to be front curtain sync. Since Jeff has confirmed that rear-sync was used, it might just be a shadow of some sort or perhaps he panned faster than the rider in that particular shot.

Front curtain sync and rear curtain sync give entirely different effects when used. For the first, the motion blur goes against the direction of motion and comes from the front of the subject. For the 2nd, the motion blur appears behind the subject and away from the direction of motion which is what is perceived to be normal.

Generally if your shutter speedfor panning below 1/100s it's better to use rear-synch to prevent blur on main subject. Distance also very important since shooting at small aperture the flash GN drop significantly. This based on my experience.
