i'm contemplating to get a dig cam. but i'm stuck between these 2 choices.
tried my hands on p80 and thinks it's really cool and good to use. but i believe p5100 specs are somewhat close, just that it's older model. i was being quoted p5100 @ $499 CP and $699 Nikon sales. so i'm not sure if i should go for P5100, the design wise looks better than p80. hmmm need some pro advise on which to get. don't wanna buy something that i may regret on IMPULSE =( |

I can't comment much on the P80 as I do not have one, and all I know of it is from the specs and what I've read. I own the P5100, and it is a good cam. Comparing the 2, the main differences would be...
1. P80 is much larger than P5100 2. P5100 is 12MP 3. P80 has wider wide angle of 27mm and 18x zoom 4. P80 has high-ISO to 6400 For the rest of the difference... you can compare the specs... Personally, I went for the P5100 because of it's compactness. The pic quality is not bad, but focusing is abit slow. If you are not stuck on having a Nikon, you may like to check out the Canon G9 or S5. |

thanks alot.
canon is not my choice yet as price are much steeper, but if i do have much cash wif me, i'll sure go for canon. been always an user of it. hmmm... i'm not a very fussy user. as long as picture quality is good i will go for the cam. the thing that's holding me is the wide angle lens. does it really pretty affect much having without wide angle? |

isn't the Canon S5 IS also about $699? About 50 or 60 bucks more than P80?
I don't understand your last sentence. Are you asking if the wide angle lens is really pretty? ![]() And how is the wide angle lens able to hold you?

haha my bad. was very slpy last night.
i mean does it really affect much without having wide angle lens? nikon size looks nicer and compact ![]() if with or without wide angle won't affect much on shooting, then i shall go ahead with the p5100. cos it looks more compact and nicer. |

Wide angle will come in handy, if you are taking shots of a group of people. You can go closer. Remember the Lumix advertisements about wide angle?
Also, if you are taking landscapes, then wide angle allows you to capture more. If you like zoom, P80 will serve you well. Plus P80 is shaped like a dslr. Somemore got pop-up flash But P5100 is compact and has got a slightly larger sensor.About high ISO, my personal view is that it isn't really important. Pictures taken at ISO800 and above will just come out like crap, if you are using pns cams.

I think u can get the P80 at $550 with free 2gb card at alan photo or john 3:16 + funan sale freebies.
![]() One added advantage of the P80 vs the P5100 is the sports mode can do 13fps at 3mp. Good to catch some action. The P5100 don't have such function.

The prices of both P80 and P5100 are about the same. Tough choice. But maybe P80 will be more worth it, given that 18x optical zoom, theoretically is harder to manufacture than the mere 3.5x zoom in P5100.

I've tested both camera.
The P5100 has much better high iso performance than the P80. For the P80, anything above iso 400 is trash. The P5100 can still take acceptable iso800 images. The P80 is only very slightly faster in locking focus than the P5100 in same condition. (although both are still quite slow). The Mg body of the P5100 is much better to hold and much better built than the P80. If u got nikon external flash, u can take very nice bounced flash photo with the P5100. U can't do that with the P80. I would consider the image quality of the P5100 much better than the P80. So if u don't need the 18x zoom, go for the P5100. But i do find the 3.5X very limiting...thats why i end up getting the P80 and letting go the P5100. ![]() And for those like me who got the P80, don't forget to update your firmware to V1.1 http://nikonasia-en.custhelp.com/cgi...er/std_alp.php ![]()
