Yup. And it seems fair, though they complained of soft pics when the straight-from-camera-JPEG massacred their resolution charts.

Quote:
Negatives versus the competition
* Live view brightness fixed to exposure (tricky in low light)
Most do not see the true value of liveview brightness fixed to exposure. What SONY has done is letting you see the overall exposure you will be getting based on your current setting. If liveview is showing a dark image, you will get a dark image when the shutter is pressed.

It's very useful in situation where there a lots of tricky light condition, liveview will be handy to provide a guide on how much over or under exposure you need to get the right exposure.

Well, you need to understand that unless it starts with "N" or "C", it won't get reviewed fairly.

Noticed in the sample pictures, most of the iso1600-3200 shots in low light conditions were taken with the 18-70mm kit lens. Not sure if they used the 16-105mm lens that they used for outdoors the pictures would have been better.

Yup. Or even the CZ 16-80.

I see. N or C pays for adverts? anyway the review keeps comparing it to a A700 which i feel it's totally a different league body. at least last part of the review was more on 450D vs a350.

I'm more of a lurker than poster. No comment on dpreview & their testing/grading.
If I had not recalled wrongly, a P****x cam that got (only just) highly recommended but later won many awards

IMHO, the A350 is more of an enthusiast rather than starter cam. It goes well with a good glass and to process in raw. The only gripe is the slower FPS and writing speed. Of course, if compared to the next up (& no LV), it could save few hundreds

Yup, but have you seen some of the comments? They may say things like "stunning sharpness" or their own LPH numbers indicate highest resolution, but when it comes to the conclusions they say "soft images" or just leave it out of the "Pros" entirely. Or if one brand has pretty bad performance in one aspect, they won't list it as a con in the conclusions (like the 450D's poor USB speed).

Usually the best thing to do is ignore most of what they write and just look at the hard numbers if that's what you're evaluating on.

yeah, that's why i dun really bother abt wat they said in the conclusion...
just look at the data and pictures and judge them by yourself.
in fact i noticed a few times that the pro n cons are wrong, lame and generic. the conclusion was cut and pasted from somewhere else.
but in general, the recommendations are quite accurate... especially on the DC sides.

i've been using the A350 for a few months now and i really like the user interface when compared to 450D or D60. Its much faster to setup the camera for a shot. Compliments to SONY!

Sorry for OT.

I'm refering to K1x (cannot be so obvious otherwise kana ban) and it'd generated many controversies then.. It's still one of the better valued. Can also adjust FF/BF but AFC

Bottomline, if you're happy then stay. Need to strike a balance between camera makes & reviews. Sometimes, take review with tongue in cheek..

I'm no fan boy of any maker. Kana playout by N***n several times. No AI support (only high-end & very ex, Dxxx). CF to SD... and now focus-drive
Memory is now cheap but wat to do with the old? And now old lenses w/o motor - scrap? Try that on the pro cam ..

Just hope Sony is not following it's path. I know & it's coming - MLU,DOF,OVF,blah..blah.. (forcing u to get higher up again)

Same thoughts for Sony, though I'm sticking to just above entry level for me when I do my photographic work.

A shame that a200 to a350 took out DOF preview and Mirror Lock Up - I don't use DOF preview (but macro shooters might be disappointed), but I use MLU rather frequently because I sometimes use very slow shots, the camera vibrates slightly when the shutter is released and the mirror flips, so the 2 second timer with MLU helps in letting the camera settle down after the mirror flips first.

That's probably why I kept my a100 as my backup rather than the successor models.

i'm also excited about this review and i thought it will be highly recommended but was not... due to what? small viewfinder, high ISO loss in detail, less shooting rate... good point really but I think the Live View of this camera is awesome...

Well, the Oly E510 suffers from the same shortcomings, and even more! Poor dynamic range, confusing menus, etc. And yet it got a "Highly Recommended".

i've been fiddling around with the A350 quite a bit in the Sony Style shops, and honestly i hadnt found the viewfinder to be as big a problem as a lot of people have commented it to be.
i wear glasses, so my eyes are actually offset quite a distance from the viewfinder. On my A100, i usually don't see all the 4 corners and the information panel at one glance, gotta shift my eyes around a little bit.
But on the "smaller" viewfinder of the A350, it actually played to my advantage! Get to glance at all the 4 corners and the information panel at once, although things do look a little bit smaller and will be tougher to check focusing.
