Default Print-outs

I've done a few test prints, and at first, they seem darker than what I get on screen. However, no manner of turning down screen brightness or contrast can bring my monitor close to the prints.

On close look, it seems that the print exposure is actually pretty close to what I have on screen, except in the shadows. The tonal range of the shadows in the prints is like more compressed, thus things in the dark cannot be seen clearly on print but are obvious on screen.

Is this normal? Or is my monitor really in need of a whacking? Do you folks include boosting the shadows as part of workflow prior to printing?

Thanks a lot! Oh the paper is fuji crystal archive, matte.
