I am aware that D40 body does not have a af motor. But the camera body can fit the 50mm f1.8 lens. So anyone have any problems doing manual focus on D40 using this lens ?
Pls advise |

there is no problem using 50mm f/1.8 on d40 by mf. it just takes more practice so that you can focus fast and accurate.

im using a d40 with 50mm f1.8, love it! though a bit inconvinence.
http://gallery.clubsnap.com/showgall...0/ppuser/64820 ( except the last pic _ kit lens) You are right, there's no AF on this lens, which means you to achieve the right focus, you get a green dot at the bottom left of the screen. Takes some practise, but more fun in a way. ![]() D40 will meter properly which means u get properly exposed pics.Just no autofocus. Same goes for d40x, d60. But at the price, no complaints.( great camera for budget tight noobies like me) Beside there are other third party lens makers that make compatible AF lens. yea, its should work fine
![]() slapped my 50mm onto my school's D40 and the focusing is fine. you may need practise to achieve swift, accurate focusing but even if you can't, taking shots of stationary subjects with your 50mm f1.8. With skill and a little luck, this tiny lens will please you for sure =) |

I like the weight of both D40 and 450D That's why I m considering both models both I action. On a tight budget. Limiting to around 1K to 1.2K . |

your other option will be to get a relatively new D80 with some warranty left (for peace of mind) and a low shutter count. This is a good camera and it has enough scope for you to grow and expand your hobby for a while. While its nice to buy brand new stuff, I think many camera owners out there take really good care of their suff and most of the items that I have bought used in the BS section even old lenses of more than 10 years are in extremely good condition. This is just another option for you to consider. If you see youself becoming a serious hobbist which is very likely in most cases...a D200 used ?? (this will allow you to use many good old nikon lenses without paying a bomb) Why not? ![]()

the range of 1 to 1.2k...cant get you a 450d (1st hand) unless you pay at least 1.3 to 1.4k onwards. else pick up a low shutter count 2nd hand d80 body in b&s at around 800 to 900. vrzone or hardwarezone seems to have cheaper deals though but they dont post pics of their equipment. or you can take the 30mm f1.4 HSM...then no need to MF already. it's a good combo to practice the sunny 16 and hyperfocal distances.

I have a D60 and use this lens. I have to say that I find manual focus to be a good challenge. At the start I found it frustrating because the matte focusing screen on the Nikon DSLRs doesn't really "snap" into focus, but with a bit of practice you will get the hang of it. I love shooting with this lens, and I find the manual focus really makes you feel more "in charge" of your picture. I know this sounds silly, but I have more fun with this than with my other AF lenses.

I have a D40x before.. and was using my 50mm mainly on it.. due to its low light capability. Did not have anyy issues in getting clear and in-focus pictures with MF... just that its a bit slowish.
