I'm thinking of trying the Contax Zeiss adaptered onto my Canon. Which would you recommend, 50/1.7 or 50/1.4?
I currently have the Canon 50/1.8 which I hardly use due to poor AF and tons and tons of CA. Most assuredly not my favorite 50mm. maybe unless I shoot B&W film on my Elan 7NE then I'll use it... a good dose of Ilford Delta cures most CA ills ![]() |

Both 50/1.7 and 50/1.4 are good lenses. 50/1.7 build quality not as good but lower in price. For close range with macro tubes 50/1.7 need to stop down more.
Rollei 50/1.8 and 50/1.4 not bad also. But your Canon 50mm should be decent enough for most purposes.

Zeiss 50/1.4 is an excellent lens if you can get the focus right.
I don't have 50/1.7 so cannot give my comment, but from what i heard, although both are similar in lab test, 50/1.4 is still better in field. U need a AF confirm adapter or a good focus screen to get the focus right. Even i use both adapter and focus screen, i hardly get focus at /1.4 in field (just slightly recompose -> oof). Normally i use 2, 2.8, the result is wonderful. |

R 50/1.4 should be compared to CZ 50/1.4. But I trust this guy more: http://tw.myblog.yahoo.com/jw!ddtNjc...v=-1&next=1505

Why you don't pick Canon EF 50mm f1.4? Its a good lens and AF working for your Elan.
I use CZ 1.4/50mm on my 20D, need more effort to focus and meter due to no AF confirmation chip on the adapter. Last edited by Jazz; 15th September 2008 at 02:56 PM. Reason: add info |

50/1.4 is not good lens in C/Y lines, must try 35/1.4, which kill canon 35/1.4L in few shots.

MMG means MM(multi-mode) type made in Germany, AEG means AE type made in Germany
![]() they are all made in G, but price is different, also quality is different. MMG more expensive and better for planar 85/1.4. |
