Hi I am new to DSLR. Owe a D80 with Kit lens 4months already. father of 2 sons and like to shoot some kids photo and occasionally love to bring them outdoor. But lazy to bring my Manfrotto 190ProB tripot along.
Anybody use the AF-S VR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED lens before? Pls share your experience. ![]() |

Your kit lens should be more than enough IMHO. Or if you want speed.. look for the 50mm or 85mm.. (in f1.8 or f1.4) and the 35mm f2 or 30mm f1.4 (sigma), those would be a better choice for portaits. My daughter is 6 months and I use exclusively my 50mm f1.4D. for me, my 70-300mm being using this to capture long range and no so fast objects.. like in ZOO.. Bird park.. slow sports.. or candid shots where I dun want to be seen.. situation where I cannot get close enough.Hope this helps.

I find that some kids have better expressions when taken candid. Once they pose in front of the camera, they have 'less interesting' expressions. the 70-300 will able to take kids while they are playing with their toys in the playground, exploring something....etc..

Look my 70-300 VR, good contrast and saturation. Fast focus in bright light. And the VR works!!
But if your kids are young and keep running around all the time and if you can work with a prime, i would recommend a 85 1.4 (pricey) or a 85 1.8 (lot cheaper).

Which one is better? and what sort of pictures are we able to capture in different conditions..like low light, fast sports etc.. 200mm seems a bit near compared to 300mm..as i have a 18-135mm kit lens and 50mm 1.8 len. but 70-200mm is good for low lights and fast sports ..hmm..what do you guys think? |

the 70-200 f2.8 is more than twice the price of the 70-300VR...
is budget ur concern? Frankly speaking i would prefer the 70-300 VR more cos of more reach and i can save the $$ for other equipment... hehe but tat's just me... ![]()

I love this lens for 3 simple reasons.
1. It is fast enough. 2. It is sharp enough. 3. It is light in weight and $$$. Hope these 2 pictures confirms the stated 3 reasons. #1 ![]() #2 ![]() |
