yes when you half press the shutter you will hear a "click" sound, this is the VR mechanism being engaged.

Look at the viewfinder, press the shutter button halfway, move the cam a bit to simulate vibration... you can see the VR working to compensate your hand movement...

Turn the VR off and just zoom in to 85mm and focus to something very distant, you should see irradical movements of your hands in the viewfinder. Now, turn on the VR and focus at the same object, when the shutter is half depressed you should see the object now stable in the viewfinder.

Hear a "tiak" sound after you press the shutter button.

When you get a relatively sharp picture even though the shutter speed is less than the "stablised" shutter speed.

shoot more and u will feel... u will know whether its on or not by looking at the picture... say u are at 85mm, and u still get a sharp picture with the shutter speed of 1/20, then VR is definitely on.

just "zoom" to the maximum you can go, turn off VR then turn ON VR.

compare the 2 image...(and please dun use a tripod)

one would be blurry for sure

Simple....
Step 1: Look through your viewfinder, move your camera from right to left. Remember what you see in the viewfinder.
Step 2: Half press the shutter to engage the VR, look through your viewfinder again, move your camera from left to right.

You will notice your vision via viewfinder slowing down. VR is active.
