Digital ESP and Spot Metering

When should we use the Digital ESP or Spot Metering? There is also a multi metering function for my camera. But after rereading the manual, I still dun understand how it works. lol

ESP is the name for both area AF and area metering, but both work separately.
spot of cos meters the small af square in the centre.
multi uses a few spots (dunno how many) and tries to average them out into one exposure, but of cos it doesn't do magic for dynamic range.
