no.

1) some tripod dont have a screw for you to screw on the head, just a stud with a slot.

2) there are 2 sizes of screw, so head is cater to the bigger size screw, be sure when you get a head, it must come with a reducer for use with a smaller screw.

manfrotto, gitzo and benro have 3/8" screw.

slik and velbon have 1/4" screw with some pro models having 3/8" screws.

newer models of heads from manfrotto, gitzo, benro and giotto have dual screw slots so you can use 3/8" or 1/4" sticks.

to be safe, you should get heads with 3/8" screw as you can adapt them to 1/4" sticks with a simple screw adapter.

a larger adapter housing made by manfrotto but difficult to get now is able to convert a 3/8" leg to 1/4" head but it adds weight and a little height to your sticks.

bringing your tripod down is a good idea as you can try out the new head and have a feel of the balance with your sticks but not necessary if you visit well-stocked stores like cathay or tkfoto.
