Sir Alex: Berba's well worth it
Fans were on tenterhooks on transfer deadline day waiting to see if Dimitar Berbatov would sign for the Reds. But for Sir Alex Ferguson the wait had been even longer, admitting that he came close to signing the player from Bayer Leverkusen in 2006.
Tottenham had already made their bid for the striker and United's last-minute intervention was too late to secure the Bulgarian's services.
Berbatov went to White Hart Lane for a reported £10.9million fee. United have paid significantly more than that for a player who has shone in the intervening two years. But Sir Alex believes the fee is money well spent.
"We tried to get him when he was at Bayer Leverkusen, but we only had a few days to get the deal done," the Reds boss told MUTV in an exclusive interview to be aired at 18:30 BST on Tuesday.
"Tottenham had already made a bid. Unfortunately, we hadn't moved at the right time two years ago. Now we've managed to get him. It's cost us a bit more money, but he's worth it."
Fans in the UK can watch MUTV’s exclusive interview with Sir Alex and new signing Dimitar Berbatov at 18:30 BST on Tuesday.
Filmed moments after the Bulgarian signed his four-year Reds deal on Monday night, the interviews are truly world exlusive and a must-see for every United supporter.
Exclusive: Berba ready to be a Red
Dimitar Berbatov is looking forward to beginning his new life at Old Trafford after completing a deadline day switch from Tottenham.
After months of speculation linking the 27-year-old striker with a move to United, the Bulgarian penned a four-year deal with the Reds late on Monday night.
Berbatov is relishing the challenges that lie ahead and is confident he can handle the pressures that come with playing for the Reds.
"I've handled expectation and pressure throughout my life - I'm not scared of that. That's why I'm here," he told MUTV in an exclusive interview.
"The most important thing is to enjoy myself, help the team win more trophies and to thank the fans. If I do that and show what I can do like I did at Tottenham, I don't think they'll be any problems.
"I hope my peak years are still to come," he added. "I'm 27 years old and now is my time.
"This is perhaps the last club in my career and the biggest club in the world. I feel I can develop in the way I want here and the way I've always wanted. That's the most important thing."
He came to United the same age with RVN when he join us! Think he shoulde be able to surpass RVN in goal scoring!
Manchester City owner Thaksin Shinawatra has agreed to sell the club to a Middle East company.
"We really have deep pockets. By closing a deal with one of the players (on Monday) they can see we are serious in developing the club into one of the top four." Al-Fahim said.
Power. exciting to see 2 manchester clubs fighting soon.
and move over, Roman.
