Hey guys, i'm wonder how is the 50mm f/1.8 compared with the 24-70L f/2.8 when shot at 50mm f/2.8?
As I'm loving my 24-105L as a walkaround, i do miss the nice bokeh of f/2.8, and getting the 24-70L is out of budget, unless i let the 24-105L go. So wondering is the difference in IQ between the 50mm and the 24-70 is very significant? As prime lens generally have very good IQ yea? (Haven own a prime before). Thanks |

I did a similar test . . . comparing my Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 to a friends Canon 50mm f/1.4. I took photos at 2.8, 4.0, 5.6 and 6.3.
- At 2.8 the Tamron was a touch soft in the corners but sharp in the middle, the Canon was sharp all around. - At 4.0 both were equal - At 5.6 and 6.3 the Tamron was better! I assume that the Canon 1.4 is better that the 1.8, and the Canon 24-70 is better at the corners than the Tamron.

Yes primes are generally faster, sharper and brighter (due to large apertures) and are great for portraits.

Thanks, so i guess I'll swap to the 50mm when I need to take some faces with bokeh, and continue to use my 24-105 on normal shots.. =)

50 is eye-level view on FF and a portrait at 1.6x.
