Default Which Lens for 10D

Hi hi,

I would like to get some Canon Users on the following for advices Please.

As I am a beginner, after reading some reviews, I totally lost or no idea on which lens to get. Obviously $$$$ is also a big factor for me. Can any Canon Users recommand me a good Lens that can last? My budget is abt $1000 for a good Zoom lens. Not really subject to Canon Lens, Sigma or Tamron is ok as long as sharp & good colour.

Btw, may I know what the cheapest price for below lens for Canon 10D?

Tamron 28-200
EF 24-85 USM
EF 17-40 f4 L
EF 24-70 f2.8 L
EF 70-200 f4 L
EF 70-200 f2.8 L
EF 70-200 f2.8 L IS

Thanks

I would recommend you, to get a 28-135 IS USM and 50mm f/1.8...

A good person to check is togu...

All within your S$1000.00 budget...

Hopefully Mr Togu can give some suggestion.

Actually I like the range of 28-135 IS, but 28mm is not very wide in 10D and I would need to spent more money on a wider lens.

Between EF 70-200 f4 L and EF 70-200 f2.8 L, is there a big difference when using it in low light or indoor places? f4 model is much cheaper and within my budget. Some shop quote me $1400 for the f4 L, is it expensive?

Sorry, working nightshift later, pls keep all suggestions and pricelist coming.......thanks.

Don't mind i ask: beginner in photography in general, beginner in digital only (experience w film), or beginner in dSLR (experience w digicam)? Or are you just being modest?

If you're really just starting photograhy, well, you have expensive taste. The three 70-200Ls range from ~$1k-$3k.

Bcoz of the (irritating) 1.6x factor, there isn't really an all-round lens for the 10D. i think you would need a mid-range zoom and maybe a wide angle prime or zoom. Wide angles are not cheap.

Can try a EF 24-85 and a cosina 19-35 (~$200).

The 24-85 goes for ~$650, 24-70L for ~$2200.

But i suspect you'll be spending a lot more than your budgetted 1k within the next 3 months.

I am a Beginner in dSLR (experience w digicam LIKE S602 & C5050).

As I new to all these SLR Lens, I dun want to spend like $600 on normal Lens then start to upgrade later which will eventually spent more $$$ on upgrading. Do know what i mean? I am just thinking far ahead.....

Thought you mentioned that your budget is about S$1000.00... with 70-200, it is already out of your budget, beside are you going to shoot with 70-200 for everything you see...??

Suggest that you PM togu and check with him.. or take other suggestion...

With S$1000.00 budget, one can never get wider and zoom at the same time... I hope you understand that...

Quite true....its either one or the other....given ur budget, u have to look at what type of photography u shoot mainly b4 deciding to get the lens that suit u most.

Heh Matrix, congrats on your purchase.

I'm a newbie myself, got my 28-135 (2nd hand, at about $600+)and 50mm somewhere in Jan. I'm still using them now, and it's very unlikely I'll let go the 28-135. it's a real general purpose multi-use, top of the range budget lens. If you have seen my photos, I'm basically a rubbish shooter, but that 2 lens cover all. (If you have not seen my photos... ) The weight, IS, range, justify the price. Kkakak, and it's a 2nd hand price.

However, I'm saving up for a 17-40 now. Feel the pain of not owning a wide lens, esp after my recent few shoots. But even if I owns a 24-70 etc, I'll still need this wide zoom.

If you'll to really ask me, I'll say get this lens, save up the rest of the cash for some good deals.

Hope this helps.

Agree with togu. The 28-135IS is a good multipurpose lens to start. If you have the budget for L lens, by all means. But remember not to fall into the lens chase. Enjoy the process of photography. The identification, the composing, the capture, the reviewing, the self-criticism, the improvement - the entire process. One thing I always tell myself, it is my skill that needs improvement, not the equipment.

Here's my suggestion. Get a reasonable starter lens covering 28-105 +/- under 1k, recommendations include:
1) Canon 28-135IS USM
2) Tamron 24-135

Like u, everyone wants the wide range. The only real solution is to get another wide lens. While some will argue that getting a zoom starting @ 24 mm is enough, to me it is really not enough after the multiplication factor.

I am looking @
1) Sigma 15-30mm
2) Sigma 14mm f2.8

Distortion at wide end? Not that apparent for 10D because of the crop factor

Why don't you go down to SEED on 2 July and look at the photos passed around, and see if you can seriously see any diff btw pictures from a $600 lens and a $2500 lens? Note: the comparison only makes sense if pictures were done by the same photog and in the period (bcoz ppl's skills grow with time).

Actually, i'm trying to dissuade into going into the L line too soon, bcoz it's expensive and addictive. If you get a second hand prosumer zoom (28-135, 24-85, 28-105/3.5, etc) you may not lose any money on the lens when you sell them to upgrade in the future.

The weakest links in a picture are usually: 1) the photographer, 2) the tripod, 3) the post-process/printing stage. It is rare that lens is the bottle neck. In other words, for 90% of us, changing from a 24-85 to a 24-70L may not change the picture quality substantiually, if at all.

That said, it's your money, and i must confess there's that very shiok feeling of handling an L (which has little to do with how good your pictures are.)

Just came back from work.

Actually, my favorite is wildlife(e.g. Bird) & portrait. But sometime landscape and candid shot.

As I very new in DSLR and new in composing my picture in Viewfinder, I like to find a lens where I can practice my composition first and hope that lens quality id good for long term usage.

Some ppls suggest me to get the Tamron 28 - 200 mm for a start lens to practice. Does anyone know the output of this lens, issit good to invest?

Since 28-135 IS USM cost abt $860++, is there any third party lens that offer same or best optical standard at the same price or lower than $800?

Ap quote me,
1. EOS 10D ~ $2650 >>>> cheap?
2. EF 17-40 f4 L ~ $1250 >>>> cheap?

I thinkI will go with above setup and source for a cheap 2nd hand 28-135 IS USM.
