The alpha hotshoe mounts are off to one side. For eg, if you see canon/nikon right, the pop up flash is right above the hotshoe. The alpha one is off to the side.

I got a Gary Fong diffuser and it was very disappointing as it has limited wide angle coverage and the exposure was also a little off on Program Mode for my D200.
I used the diffuser at 18mm to 35mm wide and almost a third of the picture had different flash intensity. Meaning the diffusing effect could not cover wide angles very well and there was a horizontal demarcation line of less flash and normal flash across the picture. Sorry, no pics to show as I deleted most of the shots and never used it again. |

Tried the oem version on the 450D, pics all come out with a reddish-orange cast. Had to use daylight WB to counter the color.

I tried to DIY something similar, but in conclusion I think just getting a small mirror and hand-holding it in front of my built-in flash is good enough for now. |

It's a diffuser, http://www.lumiquest.com/softscreen.htm
Google is the best answer to all questions.

Curious.. why not just stick a diffuser dome ( used on your external flash ) on your pop up flash?
Is the effect the same as Lumiquest and you get to use your current diffuser dome. |

When you use flash diffusers, even with non-built-in flash, you also need to remember that what the camera detects as the distance, and hence the strength of the flash it is going to produce, is going to be blocked by a diffuser, which means that you may need to increase the flash compensation. So, you can try using the GF on your built-in flash and maybe increase the flash compensation and see the effects. |
