i have a 40d and am wondering if anybody has found a way or
accessory to tweak the in built flash and make the output more natural. from everything i've read and tried myself it seems as though its best used for emergencies only.... thks cg |

more natural as in? basically, use the pop up for emergencies. if u can, invest in a external unit so u can bounce and diffuse the light for a more natural look. onboard flash will just give u a very flat lighting.

i do this, but i wouldnt suggest that you do it, unless you got both hands free.
use a piece of A4 paper to cover the pop-up flash and start shooting. of course this would make very little room to zoom and you will be not as stable as you have only one hand on the camera. but the lighting is much more diffused compared to popup flash. the hard shadows are reduced greatly. you can try it at home first before actually deciding if you want to use that method. |

If it's indoors and I don't have an external flash (I go everywhere with my flash now tho).. I use this:

thks everybody for the ideas and comments.
when i mentioned more a 'natural' light i just meant more diffused and less hard and flat. i already have an external flash (430) its just sometimes when i travel i don't always have room to carry everything i'd ideally like to have with me. in general i try not to use flash but when there is no choice and i don't have my 430 then i have tried a variety of papers, tissue, tapes, teabag(emptied )... actually this has been the best so far it just looks weird. thks again. cg |
