Hi guys,
New on photography, would like to know if the above mentioned combo is good for a newbie ? If not, what other lens should be paired with the canon 400D ? Normally, will take scenery , architecture and portrait shots.. Thanks.. |

The 17-85 is a good general purpose lens, only let down by it's high price and distortion at 17mm. The IS USM combination plus the very useful zoom range is a wonder to behold.

If you're coming from the 'compact camera' group of people with lots of zooming, I suggest this:
400D + 18-55mm IS (Make sure it's IS) + 55-250mm IS or 450D + 18-55 IS + 55-250mm IS or 400D + Tamron 17-50 + 55-250mm IS or 450D + Tamron 17-50 + 55-250mm IS Ordered with increasing cost (top to bottom) and increasing performance (ie 450D > 400D, 17-50 > 18-55IS etc). Yes, the 17-85mm is good, but the distortion and slow speed put me off.

I have to second that the 17-85, if not for its rather slow speed, it's a real versatile and good walk-around lens. You can't help but to love the IS.

Might be better off with the Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8

I feel that EF-S 17-85 IS USM is a good lens to start on a 1.6x body. If can, save a bit more for the canon 17-40 F4 L...

My bad, seems like only work with compatible lenses pls refer to the help file.
Tested on RAW pictures taken with 17-85mm it only work till certain extent, not very helpful for severe distortion. FYI Sorry this is abit OT.
