I had intended the palm leaves to be a proxy for beach

how about this one then? Is it better in the composition?

Hi KC,

For the 1st shot, there is not really a very clear subject or focus of interest.

For the 2nd shot, the leaves are over powering the scene and become too distracting. It looks overexposed too. A nice sunset picture should be darker with the sun and clouds in dark orange colors. Perharps the effect could be better if you waited longer for the sun to get very close to the horizon?
