Default Its times like these...

I need something wider than my 24-70L (38.4-112 equiv).

I have researched very thoroughly and my options have been narrowed down to these (with appropriate bank balances in brackets):

1. Purchase a 10-22mm. Keep my 30D and 24-70L. (-$800)

2. Sell my 24-70L and purchase a 17-55 f2.8. Keep my 30D. (+$30)

3. Sell my 30D and purchase a 5D. Keep my 24-70L. (-$1,144)

I know that the most logical would be option 2 but I LOVE my 24-70L. I absolutely love the build quality of it, sharpness, weather sealing (has been wet a few times and didn't worry one bit about it), zoom on the inner ring. I've used my friends 17-55 before and adored it but the sensation just wasn't the same as using my L.

The other thing I should note is that money is that although money is tight I can justify another $1000 on camera gear (or I could invest it...). FF in the future is a nice idea but I really just want to shoot wider for now.

What would you guys do in this situation?

Then isn't the choice obvious? Or rather, you only have 1 choice.....

I'm for #3. Get the 5D now.
I went the opposite - I got a 16-35L II instead...

Well whatever it is, option #2 is a definite no-go. Please don't think of just what you want *now*

30D user here, using a 10-22, 24-70L and 35L combo..
my own 2c worth of opinion..
since you mentioned u need something wider and with limited budget, might want to consider a 3rd party UWA? tokina 12-24 and sigma 10-20 represents good value to me..

thanks for all your great opinions.

i have tentatively decided on a 5D and keeping my 24-70L. i don't need the most cutting edge technology (although it would be nice). besides, if i were to keep my 30D i'd still have digic II etc anyway.

the australian dollar is so strong against the greenback and the only thing holding me back now is whether i'm able to secure a higher paying job in the next 4-6 months to give me piece of mind that i can easily afford it. i should have an idea by the end of this week.

once again, thanks clubsnap members!!

I would say go for the FF if you can afford it, the 10-20mm if you can't. Both cameras are very decent and the 5D is very affordable new or used at current prices.

My suggestion would be option 3 if you can afford it. Next would be option 1 if money is bit tight. Option 2 would be like a step backwards.

why would Option 2 be like a step backwards?

i always thought that the 17-55 was comparable with the best of the L zooms??

There, you just answered your question. The 17-55 is comparable, but it just isn't made to be L.

Well, there is a rumor that the 24-70 f2.8 might be updated with IS soon. In that scenario, would u sell your 24-70 for the updated version?
That's another scenario you might need to consider

Disclaimer: Note, it is rumor only, might not be true.

17-55mm on crop bodies is equivalent like your 24-70mm on a FF body.
I think enough have been said about 17-55mm. It's sharp, fast but just not weather-sealed.
If you go through the dpreview forum, everybody will recommend u the 17-55mm if you hold a crop body.

Only silly singaporeans who are FF dreamers will recommend u L lenses. If you are planning to get only L lenses, get a 5D and don't look back at crop bodies. If you wanna wait for the 5d successor, save up on ya $$$ warchest first. have u saved up $5k yet? =D

Haha I like this.

Never hurts to dream. Ok well it hurts your wallet to make your dream a reality.

Honestly I don't expect Canon to release a 24-70 with IS and kill off their other best-selling walkabout L zoom, the 24-105L.

I believe half of Canon's objective in putting both the 24-70 f/2.8L and the 24-105 f/4L IS is to confuse some customers and give them a lens selection headache.
