Default Is EF 50mm f/1.8II supposed to be noisy ?

Bought my 50 mm yesterday

used it for the first time last night and noticed that it made a loud screeching sound when it's not able to focus...

Is that normal ?

Need expert advice.

Thanks!

Why does everyone go 'need expert advice' nowadays?

Heck, I don't need to be an expert to tell you that 50mm f/1.8II is the cheapest lens and yes it's loud when focusing.

Forget the noise, for such price, that thing is sure to be able to deliver real decent results.

Noisy is normal.
Low light focus is poor.
But - its sharper than the kit lens.
In lenses, you get what you pay for...

Somebody told them repeatedly to consult SME - Subject Matter Experts ...

Wonder why people are so concerned about the focusing noise. I could understand this for video cameras where the mic is just next to the lens. If we could hear ultrasonic frequencies maybe we would be shocked by the noise of all those USM/HSM lenses - Is there any report about disturbed bats or other animals who can hear ultrasonic noises?

I can get the point of loud af-- imagine this: you're shooting a symphonic concert and the conductor just puts down his hands when everything is quiet, and then everyone in the hall hears "JEEEEEEEK!!" and stares at you, then claps later. Quite irritating right?

Pai sey to all the experts...

Ai ya... I am anxious mah...

In fact I didnt know the feel is so plasticky until i came back home to try it.

Now i kow why it's so cheap !

HA! But it's not just that it's noisy than the USM, it's sounds more like the motor is stuck if the lens fully extended.

I was hoping to take my sleeping baby, but the sharp shreking noise can wake up the dead!

Think i better bring it back to Canon... Xian

is that why the man from OP emphasize abt the local warranty and I was given a faulty one....?

Do you think the mirror slap is not disturbing? News flash: symphonic concerts are for listening, not for "shooting" (or talking on the handphone, or chatting with your neighbor, or ...)

Otherwise, even cheap lenses come with a high-tech feature called "manual focus".

Hey man, I was just citing it as an example. Not sure if you're trying to be sarcastic, but just chill.

Not to rub salt in your wound, but you should have done adequate research if you were looking for a lens to shoot sleeping children.

Bring it back to Canon. I'm sure they will return a quieter lens to you.

TS wake up, this lens *is* that noisy. No matter how many times you return it to Canon you will still get the same motor noise.

You might want to look at lenses with USM

This lens is kinda loud but if it's really shrieking, or can wake up sleeping children, then something is definitely wrong with it.

In my experience, the mirror slap was louder then the AF noise. Maybe something is really wrong with the lens.

Anyway, for the sake of your children's rest, get a USM capable lens, ring type if you can manage it.
