Default Boats & Island

Dear all, I would like suggestions for improvement on the photo. I was attracted at first by the various coloured boats. Then I find that the boats seem to all align in one direction and also the island seems aligned in the same direction too.

I would like to know how is the composition? How about the angle which I took it from? Is the cropping too tight? Also, can suggest how to bring out more details in the clouds without blowing out the boats' colour and the right side of the clouds? Other suggestions on how to improve the picture and photo taking technique are appreciated. I find details of the cloud lacking and the sky looks a bit soft, with the right side of the clouds overexposed.

Thanks.

hi. when i first saw the picture, i was attracted to the hill, not the boats. i would say the cropping is okay for me, but i don't know about the others in this forum. hmmm, do you still have other angles to take from? if you wan more details of the sky, you can try the 'burn' tool in photoshop. should bring out more details from the sky. if the right side of the clouds are overexposed, try the 'dodge' tool in photoshop. one more thing, would it be better if you cropped the whole picture to portrait to just a few boats in sight? i dunno, just my two cents worth.

the boats are aglin in one direction due to tidal stream. you can see that from east coast park also.

1) i like this picture and the cropping.

2) seems slightly overexposed, so the boats' whites are glaringly slightly blown. half-stop less might help. also might resolve some motion as perceived from my end.

3) more details for clouds? see 2.

Thanks for the comments guys. I am not very good at photoshop yet but I will try to find out about the 'dodge and burn' tool mentioned by HTCahHTC. Ya, like what night86mare has mentioned, I find the boats a bit blown too. That happens when I try to bring up the highlights to see more of the clouds. Maybe at the same time I will try to bring down the exposure and see how it turns out. Unfortunately, this was taken during a holiday trip so I don't have chance to take again unless I visit again.

And now I know why the boats are all aligned in one direction..Thanks!!

Eh, shouldn't you be underexposing to get more cloud detail, not overexposing?

Hi Calebk, sorry I am really not very good and familiar with photoshop yet. Therefore, maybe I got the wrong idea. But I will try out the various suggestions given. Thanks!

This has nothing to do with photoshop; it's plain exposure rules. To get more cloud detail, underexpose, because the sky is of higher EV.

Hi, I am not too sure about that but I do wish that the picture is sharper. I often see those pictures of other forumers which are very sharp and have very good contrast. However, I cannot achieve that leh....any suggestions on getting that effect?

Exposure plays a part in perceived sharpness; if it is overexposed, the eye can perceive the subject to be soft, even when it is in focus.

i like the composition but not the colours, maybe because its alittle too dull and lack contrast of light and shadows. also, the sharpness seems to fall off at the right area. maybe i'm seeing things.

try shooting at the golden hours in the morning or evening.
