Dear all, I would like suggestions for improvement on the photo. I was attracted at first by the various coloured boats. Then I find that the boats seem to all align in one direction and also the island seems aligned in the same direction too.
I would like to know how is the composition? How about the angle which I took it from? Is the cropping too tight? Also, can suggest how to bring out more details in the clouds without blowing out the boats' colour and the right side of the clouds? Other suggestions on how to improve the picture and photo taking technique are appreciated. I find details of the cloud lacking and the sky looks a bit soft, with the right side of the clouds overexposed. Thanks. ![]() |

the boats are aglin in one direction due to tidal stream. you can see that from east coast park also.

2) seems slightly overexposed, so the boats' whites are glaringly slightly blown. half-stop less might help. also might resolve some motion as perceived from my end. 3) more details for clouds? see 2. |

Thanks for the comments guys. I am not very good at photoshop yet but I will try to find out about the 'dodge and burn' tool mentioned by HTCahHTC. Ya, like what night86mare has mentioned, I find the boats a bit blown too. That happens when I try to bring up the highlights to see more of the clouds. Maybe at the same time I will try to bring down the exposure and see how it turns out. Unfortunately, this was taken during a holiday trip so I don't have chance to take again unless I visit again.
And now I know why the boats are all aligned in one direction..Thanks!! |

Hi Calebk, sorry I am really not very good and familiar with photoshop yet. Therefore, maybe I got the wrong idea. But I will try out the various suggestions given. Thanks!

This has nothing to do with photoshop; it's plain exposure rules. To get more cloud detail, underexpose, because the sky is of higher EV.

Exposure plays a part in perceived sharpness; if it is overexposed, the eye can perceive the subject to be soft, even when it is in focus.

i like the composition but not the colours, maybe because its alittle too dull and lack contrast of light and shadows. also, the sharpness seems to fall off at the right area. maybe i'm seeing things.
try shooting at the golden hours in the morning or evening. |
