Default Manual Lenses on 40D

recently i got my hands on a couple of manual mamiya 645 lenses and a mamiya to eos adapter. i fixed one on last night but realised that i have no idea how to meter with the lens. there is no af confirmation which is still fine but i have 2nd guessing whether the metering is working accurately or not. any advise on how to utilise those lenses?

i tried it with spot metering which i think works after shooting off a few shots but is there a proper way to work those things? am i right to say that i need to manually stop down the lens to take a meter reading first?

1) you need to do stop down metering.
2) some eos camera will not meter accurately when using manual focusing lens via adapter.
3) some eos camera will not fire when using manual focusing lens via adapter.

thanks. so am i right to say other than when i am using the lens wide open, i will need to manually stop down to the actual aperture to take a reading?

i am not sure whether the metering is accurate or not but so far no problems taking photos with it.

Compose>focus>stop-down>meter>shoot>check histogram>EC as necessary.

yup, if u want to meter exposure at f5.6, you have to stop down 1st.

about using adapter with af confirmation chip :

1) if you have install split focusing screen, dont bother to use adapter w/o the chip. adapter w/o the chip is better.

2) always use it on newer eos body (10d onwards) does help if you dont have split focusing screen.

3) there is a big time lag when using with eos boy (from d60 backwards) before the af confirmation led in the view finder lights up and also no beep sound.

4) some eos body will not fire when using these adapters, as with my eos50e, the camera will not fire. but on my 1v, it fires. for those who dont use film, i guess no issue.

5) watch out for the inner flange of these adapter, newer adapter has smaller inter diameter due the the flange, which is design to press down the aperture activation pin. without this, you cant stop down the aperture.

6) point (5) is bad news for those using takumar lens. takumar lens has a selector to switch the aperture between wide open and the pre-set aperture. this helps during focus and composing the photo due to bright view finder.

7) some eos camera may require some compensation, it is known that eos 30 and 33 series has problem metering with manual focusing lens.

8) between wide open and stop down aperture, you may requires to compensate the exposure accordingly to your manual focus lens and each lens behave differently from another.

yeah. i realised it looked quite nice when i uploaded the files. but focusing can be a pain and metering is too inconsistent already.

Which metering mode are you using it in? I thought modern canons should have no prob metering with non canon lenses.... You need to use stop down metering for sure but my experience with manual lenses is that the camera's meter reading is still accurate.....

i was using average and spot. while taking those pics, it turned out alright. but when i went outdoors, it kept underexposing even at wide open and 1/125 at bright afternoon sun. weird. the camera metered the scene as over but the pic came out under.

Try using the matrix or whatever it's called metering, and EC as necessary.

I found that using OM lenses on XXD bods, the tendency is to over-expose as i stop down, with whichever screen I use.

After awhile, you'll notice a consistent pattern and will be able to compensate even before metering.

Pix #2 is OOF. You could try one of the after-market split-image screens, or the rough ground screen from Canon designed for manual focusing.

CHEERS!

tried matrix. kept going underexposed. i did compensate but thought there shld be a better way of doing this. using AV seems to give more accurate results.

btw pix 2 is slightly OOF cos of the dof. i used liveview and magnified it 10 times to focus.

the dof is so narrow that the words beside it were already oof.

the full size pic can be seen here.

5D with OM 55/1.2, using the Ee-S manual focus screen, OM-EOS adapter with AF confirm
