you can set auto image rotation at your camera function, whatever software able to read the meta tag will display vertical shots accordingly.

you should use Nikon ViewNX to view the images, it is a freeware for Nikon camera users.

You should never rotate your images using the windows picture viewer. It will degrade the image quality permanently. Use something like PhotoShop or Lightroom to do the job properly.

I know how you feel bro. PhotoShop is a PAINFULLY slow way to rotate images. However, you usually only bother with the few images that make it into your post processing line up, so it doesn't take so long in the end. LightRoom does a really good job because you can just "paint" a rotation command over your selected pictures and it does it instantly, but it isn't free...in the end, if you are looking for something free, just use Nikon ViewNX to do it. It will rotate all your images with no loss of quality and at no cost.

can't you set the auto image rotation in your camera?? once you open in photoshop, it will rotate by itself automaticely.

Nikon viewNX is free, faststone also free, so many image viewing software also free, just google it.

Lossless rotation of Jpeg happen for right angle rotation for a specific file size. The original file size from your camera is ok to lossless rotate, but if you crop it first that it may not. So rotate first then crop.

free rotation will result in loss of quality.

http://sylvana.net/jpegcrop/losslessapps.html give a list of application that can do lossless rotation.

I have used two of them -
http://www.irfanview.com/ is a free utility that has a plug-in that can do Jpeg lossless rotation in batch (in Thumbnail mode).

http://www.xnview.com/ XnView is another.

Irfanview, the old acdcsee classic and faststone can do lossless rotation. Faststone cannot disable jpeg optimisation, so if you do 360 degree rotation, you will find the rotated file is different from the original file.

In Photoshop, actually you don't have to open up each file to rotate nor do you need to use the automate command. You can just use the File Browser (Button on the top right area), select the thumbnails of the pictures and just rotate.

I use Downloader Pro (from Breeze Systems) to download, sort (by date), rename, rotate to my computer in one step. It can do more (e.g. automatic backup). Rotation is lossless and the EXIF tag is updated (so that other software such as Lightroom / Photoshop Album doesn't try to rotate it again). I believe the thumbnail gets rotated as well.

There's a bunch of tools that does lossless rotate - google for it and pick one you like.

Try Rota or JPEGCrop which uses lossless algorithm to rotate JPEGs.

Here's the link to Rota 0.7. http://park2.wakwak.com/%7Etsuruzoh/...ota/rota07.zip

(Disclaimer: Always backup your original images and work with a copy for the rotation. There are rare occasions when I got corrupted images after rotation with Rota.)

Some other utilities... http://www.google.com/search?q=lossl...eg+crop+rotate
