Default Which compact camera to get?

I'm looking to buy a compact camera that handles low-light pictures well, and hopefully of a thinner size compared to my old Nikon Coolpix. Does anyone have any good recommendations? Thanks!

Macro isn't very close up. 4cm macro at the wide end. IMO very useable 6MP up to ISO1600. Even though rated 12MP, it seems to be interpolated but I think all Super CCD are interpolated. You can try this site for samples and comparison. It looks better than Coolpix S600.

6MP vs 12MP details

6MP

6MP 100% crop

6MP crop upsample to 12MP 100% crop (using Photoshop Elements 5.0)

12MP 100% crop

12MP

The 12MP image looks like it does not contain any more real spatial information than the 6MP. There may be a slight improvement in resolution but it doesn't look convincing and IMO a waste of storage space.

Closest macro at 28mm. (you can't get closer with longer zoom) Not a great macro performer plus quite heavy barrel distortion at the 28mm setting. Otherwise it's a good overall performer with very useable high ISO.

I am tempted by Panasonic's DMC-FX500.

25mm~125mm with OIS,
AP, SP and manual exposure control
HD (1280x720) video capture

But small sensor leh... 1/2.33" small compared to the Fuji which boasts 1/1.6" which is the main reason why it's a good high ISO performer. Of course, the F30/F31 are even better high ISO performer if you can still get them.

I had used a few PnS camera over the years, recently sold my G9, and bought the Ricoh GX100, as i like the wide angle (24mm) and with additional lens adaptor, it could go to (19mm).

A great travel camera for me to bring along, when my dslr was not with me.

Sadly only a few brand of PnS cameras had wide angle coverage....G9 is great too, but not wide enough for me to use indoor.

You may want to consider Ricoh GX100....cheers.
