Default the tech hoo-ha about flashes ?? and with 717..

hey guys..

yeah what's all the guide number and all that ?

i know the metz 32 mz-3 or whatever is really compatible with sony 717.. is it good ? anybody can vouch for it's goodness ?

just wondering.. if it says 32 guide number.. does that mean if i shoot on ISO 100 it'll illuminate 32 meters ?! i need a flash that can handle at least 20m... all the time.

guide number = max flash distance x aperture fstop,

with a specific ISO (usually 100) and focal length (for zoom head)

So with a flash of GN32 (metres), the flash can reach 16m if you use F2.0 on your 717.

what ?

wait wait
GN of 32..

then..
32 times what ?
32 times 1/2 ?

then if f/stop is 5.6,

32 times 1/5.6 ?

put it simply...

max flash distance = GN / aperture Fstop

is this clearer?

Think should be GN 32 / F5.6 = distance illuminated (ISO 100?)

Maybe can refer to this website

okay yes it's GN divided by distance = fstop

or GN divided by fstop = distance

and if you use ISO 400 instead of ISO 100 you'll get two times the distance illuminated

right ?

Haven't sell but maybe not selling already. I not sure which is better because I am a flash idiot I still figuring out how to make full use of my two flash units. I rarely took pictures with flash though but going to try out the two of them when I get the chance the next time when I go outdoors for shooting practice.

which metz ? I heard the metz 32mz-3 is selling above $200 and the sca above $100, so should be around $300++ for both of them ?

IIRC, metz 32z series are quite popular with Sony users
z1 being the cheapest but not able to use the SCA adaptor for Sony cams
but general consensus is that the adaptor doesn't seem to have much of an effect.
personally, i am using the metz 32z-m2 with omnibounce on my 717
effects are quite good during my coverage for my friend's wedding
but i should seriously get down to making a bounce card...
reviews on the sony f32x flash isn't that encouraging either...
so i guess the metz would suffice...
