Critic on the following:
Exif:
Exposure: 1/5 sec
Aperture: f/4.0
Focal Length: 15mm
Lens: 12-24mm with CPL Polarizer

- Is the dream effect processing better of with the picture?
- Should I crop the lower portion of the photo, giving emphasis on the horizon and lamp post?
- Feel free to do what you could do to make the photo better...

no clear subject.

sky not dramatic.

foreground under-exposed and empty.

dun tink CPL will contribute anything to this scene, perhaps to cut light and increase exposure time to create "dream like" effect (eg, water and clouds all blurred). but then, after using a CPL, u shot wide open at F4. wat exactly are u trying to achieve?

and the lamp post looks soft. did u use a tripod?

i can see why you want to use f/4.0 to achieve a dreamy feel, to "soften" the image. but i hope this is what you did because you wished to achieve the dreamy feel , rather than just letting the camera decide and correct its error later with processing. there is a subtle difference; in the former you know what you are doing, that displays a sort of familiarity with technicalities of photography, in the latter, you are using software to correct mistakes.

anyways - a dreamy feel *could* work here, but not with this scene, really. it simply does not add up.

perhaps you could see the links posted in this thread here if you are familiar with the concepts of exposure, etc.. if not, brush up on these, then visit the links eventually. i'm sure you can draw some inspiration.

I shot only handheld, didn't bring tripod. I shot wide open to let more light in since I shot handheld only.

I gave emphasis to the blue sky using the CPL hence making the foreground dark..yet not sure if its a good idea. Couldn't make the water and reflection smooth since I could not set to shutter priority since no tripod.

i'm not quite sure about this, but i am almost positive that with no sun, a polariser does nothing with regards to "enhancing color or contrast in clouds".

Thanks for giving me a good insight on this. Very nice pic on the link you gave. I'll take note on how i could achieve a similar shot based on the pictures on the pbase link.

Also, on the CPL, I'm unsure it it gave a boost on the blueish sky color but it could be that during the day I shot the photo the sky could be blue that time.

one possible trick of creating dream like photo in camera is to de-focus half way into a long exposure.

but how much into the exposure to defocus and how much to defocus are things that must be worked out.

i ve yet to personally try this out.

but thanks to DSLR, we can view the results immediately and compensate accordingly.

TS, i hate to bring you the awful truth, whenever i go out for night shoots, or even in my mind i have an idea of having just one long exposure shoot, i would always lug my tripod along. Regardless of where am i going, and when am i going. It pays to bring the heavy tripod out. I would say that this pic is very very much wasted, given the blues of the skies and the fairly dramatic cloud colours on the lower half of the pic, if you had your exposure long enough you could compose this pic into a semi pano, with the lights having the starlight effect leading into the clouds. It would be one pic that i frame and hang it on my wall....
