wait - why do you want live view?

i mean, sure it's useful, but have you used a ttl (through the lens) viewfinder before? from my personal opinion, this shouldn't be your first priority.

If Live View is your first priority, get a P&S/Prosumer.

Oh, I'm used to the viewfinder but it's more for my spouse, that's why I was thinking of live view. I suppose not all my family members are pro shooters, not like some members here, probably even their kids know how to use a DSLR

oh - that's fair enough then.

was wondering why you would put it as a priority..

well, cheapest will be the e-420 like people have said. i can't think of anything else with live view and such a low price.

The E-420 will be good. Besides that would be the more expensive Sony A-350. Live View is pretty good on that one.

Since TS is going to use the DSLR viewfinder and spouse uses the live view, why look for one that is "cheapest"? I would think, since both of you are going to use it, as long as it is not too expensive, more importantly, you and your spouse must like the features, functionality, and the feel of the camera. After all, your usage cost will be cheaper than most CSer since the cam is going to be used by two persons.

also.. on the bright side, the e-420 is small in size. that's certainly a plus point for most members of the fairer sex. of course it depends though.

Yes, that's what I'm looking at for my spouse but on the other hand, the canon 400D, Nikon D40/D40x/D60 looks good too, although the latter has only the viewfinder

The rest are good as well. There is also the Canon 450D.

And Olympus might be announcing the E-520 soon. No idea when though.

Any idea of the price for E-420? and what about the availability of the lenses for Olympus? are they easily available, cheap/expensive ?
