Question Waterfall in Kuranda, Cairns

Dear all,

This pic was taken in Cairns over April.
I took this shot at F11, ISO 200 at 1/256s with exposure -0.3s, using Aperture priority.

Could you kindly give me your feekback on the following pls?
Thank you!

1. Is this picture considered underexposed?
2. Is the tree trunk as a foreground considered a distraction or it leads your eyes to the water fall?
3. Why is it that my pic look blurs when downloaded in this Clubsnap and when i view it in PS, it is sharp? How did u guys get the sharp image?
4. What else could you comment on this pic other than the above mentioned. pls?

Thank you all!

For sharpness, when you resize, you can try using bicubic sharper, instead of bicubic. Bicubic sharper doesn't really work well for faces, but should work fine for landscape. Or unsharp mask, for this photo at this size, maybe can try setting amount 50%, radius 0.5, threshold 3, see how it looks and adjust as necessary.

Hi, I've tried the unsharpen mask and it looked great on PS but then when i download that on this website, the pic looked compressed quite badly....

Sigh...I need technical advice as well on my photo...Maybe it is so badly posted that is why no one make any effort to comment...sigh....

How does it look after saving it on your comp, and before uploading? IF it looks badly compressed already, then check your settings when you save.

Exposure is actually pretty good. I won't say it's underexposed at all.

However, I do find the tree trunks, especially the one on the left, distractions. Makes me feel as though they're obstructing my view and I want to get around to get a full, unobstructed view of the waterfall.

On my display, your image is pretty sharp though...not what I would consider soft. However, with landscape you can afford that extra bit of sharpness to bring out the rock/foliage detail, but then again, how well your image takes to post-camera sharpening is also a factor that will affect the final product; some images can take more post-camera sharpening than others.

Don't know if your EXIF is accurate though...don't ever recall a camera doing 1/256s shutter speed; it's usually 1/250s.

Hi,
Thanks for affirming the exposure level of my pic.
May i ask, as u know that there are some pics that have tree trunks in the foreground and it added interest to the background, how can one tell if the foreground is a distraction or an interest that will lead the eyes to the background?

I remembered seeing one shot that Zoosh took with lots of bush in the foreground, but it's focus is led to the background. Errm...i'm not sure if i'm allowed to bring his pic/link in for discussion to clear the doubt "When is the foreground a distraction or an attraction?"

Not to mention, some foreground items are underexposed and it appeared like one dark item at the bottom of the pic, but it seems like most people didn't matter abt that...

Can you advice me on that pls?

Thanks!

if the branches and trunks are included as "foreground interest".. i think they are not very interesting.. and they look haphazard (like cut up here and there)..

if they are included for "framing".. then they are incomplete and do not serve as a frame..

i dun think the foreground is underexposed.. with the sun above you it's natural for the trees to be cast in shadow (by its own leaves?!).. if everything was bright i think it might look strange..

my 2 cents..
