Talking El Nido, Palawan with Powershot G9

El Nido is part of the Palawan part, western part of the Philippines.

This series is my first attempt to do Underwater Photography.

There were 2 challenges that I encountered for this kind of photography - low light and focusing. I had 2 dives in El Nido, one is 20 meters (60 feet) and the second is 30 meters (90 feet). It was a blessing that up to these depths, light is still available and the water visibility is good. But shooting an object over 5-10 feet is a bit difficult that I wish, I have external strobe. As with the focusing, underwater neutral buoyancy requires a skill I do still need to master. Luckily, El Nido current is weak.

C&C's are most welcome.

[1] Miniloc Island

[2] Divers in Popolcan Forest - 20 meters deep

[3] My first nudibranch shot

[4] Another shot of nudibranch

[5] Buddy, we're 30 meters deep, want to go deeper?

Hahaha.... dude, you DON'T need a Strobe to do that

Yes, having a Strobe would make it easier.... but your built-in flash will work too. Just switch your G9 to Macro mode.... move closer to the subject and shoot with the flash on. Practical on slow moving stuff like Coral or Nudi 1st...... even for Night Dive.... it will still works, as long as you have enough light for the camera to focus on the subject.... ur own dive light, or a buddy shining the light for you.... you could still take photo at night.

Do try it next time.... cheers

Great shot. Considering that you didn't use an external strobe!

uh, the G9 canon housing has a hugeass lens port. if you do macro up close, you're going to get the shadow of the lens port in the photo. sure it's doable, but might be a little tougher than expected.
