i do not wish to do this, but it affected me a second time....
Bought pro gaff .... use on my 1 wk old D300 few weeks ago, thought i just tear out a bit then to see if all is okie, to my horror the residue stick like nobody's business....wasted ONE WHOLE day trying to remove it..die die didn't wanna use any chemicals, though i ended up trying goo-gone at the end of the day...didn't really solve the prob as could see some marks on the grip caused by the goo-gone...so ended up going to change my rubber parts at nikon...cost me 30+... relieved then...very happy that all was over...(though i must say due to the stupid attempt to remove the residue, i wasted my whole sat, and thus couldn't afford the time to go down for the mika hakkinen display at city hall that sunday, which turned out to be a really bad choice...) so today, was preparing my nikon 60mm micro for a deal tomorrow, took out the tape, and well to my horror, it took along a little of the wordings and i think its some paint...well the lens is still black overall, but under light you can see the marks.. maybe its just me...but i will stay away from it forever.... |

ic.. i think it may not be a gaffer tape. could it be a duct tape hence it leave the marks? *curious* As i see pro gaff camo duct tape at one of the shop in peninsula. I would not get that as it will leave a lot residue on whatever items you tape on. I try that before hence i learn my lesson. i m happy with canturn's apollo gaffers, eugenep's camo gaffers too as they dont leave any marks for a leave 6 mths or depend on the usage.

i've used it on my konica hexar. In fact i taped the entire thing with PRO-Gaff. After reading your posts i tore off some of the sides. only one corner had like a tiny ball of glue which came right off after rubbing it with my fingers. It's been taped for roughly a month.

I have been using Apollo gaffer tapes for my gaffering service for the last two years.
No problem at all. I believe gaffering tapes only leave residue if you paste them on rubber regions. ie the handgrip etc. No problem when I gaffer on lens body as there's no rubber involved.

Standard gaffer tapes does not use chemicals for adhesion, it uses synthetic rubber. I would assume it become sticky when came in contact with material of the same kind.
Then again, I have no experience using pro-gaff. But if it is made the same way as Apollo, there shouldn't be problem as long as you keep it away from rubbers.

I have a pair of plier and the rubber on one of the handle came off. So I used gaffer tape to coil around the area. Few days later the rubber on my tape become watery and sticky.
I believe it's the material you stick it on, not the tape itself.

this is important information.
could heat have anything to do with it? the adhesive may melt or something under heat?

Not sure about heat. I believe the adhesive rubber should be stable within the working temperature range of the lens.

After reading this post, I panicked, starts to peel off all the gaffer tape on all my lens (5 pcs) and my new D300... BTW ( I am using pro gaff)
Those gaffer tape have being on my equipment for more than 2mths. I am glad to say nothing peeled off and there are no residues of any sort. If your wording came off, it is likely due to the word printing quality of the lens. It is not uncommon if the surface is not clean properly before printing or the oven baking after the printing process was not carried out properly, the painted words are likely to come out. It is therefore unfair to say the problem is due Pro-gaff..... my 2 cents worth. LOL, I will have to re-gaffer my equipement again... since I have to re-do it, I might as well buy a new roll of Desert pattern gaffer ![]() ** BTW I am not related to pro-gaff in any way ![]()
