Default Charges Due When Shipping Goods From O'seas?

Hi all, helping a friend to ask the following question:

My friend is interested in bringing in a small quantity of goods from overseas. Aside from the obvious cost of the items and shipping, are there any other charges that must be paid?

depends on the goods as well, might need duties.

There are multiple charges involved. Let me try to remember all the costs involved...

    Price List

    Cost of item
    Shipping
    Insurance
Money transfer fees (whether credit, cheque or bank transfer)
GST (If item cost is over S$400)
Bus fare to the post office/warehouse to pick up your stuff

And despite all of the costs involved, it is cheaper to get stuff overseas most of the time. Just buy more at a shot to save on shipping which is the big killer here.

    f/8 and be there.

Please note that the $400 benchmark before GST is payable also covers the cost of shipping, not just the cost of the item itself. Customs & Excise compute the total cost of the item when it arrives here.

Agreed....normally just purchase items which include the shipping cost and convert the sum to Sing $$$ must be less than $400... I would split the items up to reduce cost of paying the GST....

Oh okay. It's for personal use, not under a company.
