Thanks everyone for your comments.
The high contrast thingy is subjective as with everything that's got to do with photography I personally like this photo even though the bottom of the boat is overexposed, some thing which is difficult to keep in check due to the speed of the event and the reflectivity of the water.

I personally find the high contrast complement this kind of action shot. The high light with the water and droplets splashing about, makes one feels the heat of an action pack race.
