The first few paragraphs of your post was wrought in fear, distrust, and deep conflict. So pardon me for quoting the most humane paragraph instead.

What you just wrote is in fact how one would treat a family member. Guide them, teach them properly so that they too will know how to behave properly and in return take good care of the family.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying you're in the wrong or anything. It is indeed a dilemma that both the employers and maids face..... except maybe the Maid Agency who wins regardless.

By having the clause in your contract about not having off days is a protection for us based on the reasons that I have stated. To practise it or not is up to the employer. It is situational in nature. That is real life. My golden rule is to treat people with respect.

Let's face it. A person with mal-intent would find ways to manifest it, regardless of whether you allow him/her to leave the house. I totally respect your discretion, and trust you will use it in the most humane way.

what is really fair? A maid earning 370 a month, and send back 200, her family can live really well off that pay check. And while sending her pay back, live off the employee.

It might seemed that we are paying very little for the maids, but it's not the case.

    370 ( pay check )
    200 (Maid levy)
100 (Maid stuffs : clothings and stuffs)
    120 ( Meals inhouse)
    ---------
    790 ( a month)
    ---------------

Let's not forget the insurances, and the flight back home at the end of the contract, what about the medical expenses she might have and other things that might happen.

there isn't much to argue about, if the maid don't think she is being treated correctly, then go back home and be whatever she wants to be, she can be a tai tai if she wants. But when she's here, stick to the agreement she had signed and keep to it.
good figures i wish you should have born in USA .or SWISS well nothing in person against you ..you will realise the cost of a maid there .u still have a big luxury here

most of the maids repay the loan for 18 months ....

its ok to crib of somany things ..these are all man made ..contract and agreements these words look good .one uses it for ones benefit as and when requirred .

I know so many of them here break in so many places lets take example of rentals ..most of the guys renting house break it ..aren't they greedy and selfish ?

just one line ...lets be good human being's

Maid is a benefit and yeah contributes in a big way for countries benefit & development of the society lets not abuse it.

everyone in the family works ?why as u have someone to take care of ur kids elder's house food ?

what is a bigger benefit ???? a day off every week or ????

Maid in HK court after sex with boss's teenage son

The 45-year-old had sex with the boy, 14, after watching Internet porn together. -Reuters

    Reuters

HONG KONG - A 45-year-old Indonesian maid admitted having sex with her Hong Kong employer's 14-year-old
son after watching Internet porn together, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

A court heard how the maid, a divorcee and mother of two, had sex with the boy in a relationship that lasted five months, the South China Morning Post reported.

The boy tried to end the affair, but she refused, the paper reported. The teenager eventually confessed to the relationship to the leader of a Christian group he belonged to and the maid was arrested.

The maid, Suwartin, had worked with the boy's extended family for 11 years and pleaded guilty to five charges of
committing an indecent act with an under-age partner, the Post reported.

She later apologised and said she "would live with the shame of what she had done for the rest of her life", the paper
    reported.

"She had acted out of loneliness," the paper quoted the maid's lawyer as saying.

She will be sentenced in two weeks' time.

Maids from the Philippines, Indonesia and Sri Lanka are often the subject of court cases in richer neighbours such as Hong Kong and Singapore, but usually as victims of abuse rather than offenders.

Well what maid leave has to do with this ?

I can list a million criminals getting sentenced every year ..who are not maids.

will that justify ..try to see the big picture..its nothing to do with humans who are in profession of maid or worker .

Its something very personnel to a person who is in the profession of a maid and who did it ..and not all maids/home workers can be painted with the same color

That would be really unfair and not really nice to argue even ...just no link with the above thread.

I am just putting it in, as there are such maids around. don't always blame the employers for not trusting the maids to do the right thing.

A person should always respect the contract she/he had made. If not, then don't make it in the frist place.

I feel too many Singaporeans have an entitlement mentality that says that a live-in domestic servant is a must.

Whatever happened to having your own kids helping with the chores? I've friends living in other cities abroad who are dual-income parents with kids and they get by very well without the need of a maid. Mind you, Melbournites and New Yorkers are as busy and occupied as Singaporeans, and they do jolly well without live-in help.

Is it a case of taking the easiest way out? Not only do I see a lot of outsourced parenting, I see a growing lack of parental bonding with their children.

Perhaps not everyone is cut out to be a responsible employer. The maid is your employee, not a slave and neither should she be the au pair or a substitute parent.

There's a letter in the forum today.... and I agree with her totally.....

(quote) "The calls for a day off for maids seem fair and is fine if nothing untoward happens.

But if she gets pregnant and must be repatriated, the employer loses the outstanding loan amount.

Then comes the antagonising wait of another month while the paperwork is processed for a new maid. Meanwhile, the employer must juggle work and managing the household.

The process of hiring a new maid is long, the money we stand to lose is hefty, and the problems can put our livelihoods at risk"
    (unquote)

Not to mention if the maid get HIV etc etc.....

It's a lose lose situation for the employer.

Well, then.. form a collective lobby to amend unfair labor laws that place both employee and employer at a disadvantage.

Well, there are number of Singaporean who are sentenced to prison, caned and die for various crime they committed. Maybe, we should therefore, on the safe side, 1) not trust any Singaporean, 2) ....

You get the drift, shall I have to draw the rest of the picture?

We are supposed to be living in a civilized society. The way how foreign maids are treated in the country is barbaric.

That statement in bold is a sweeping one as well isn't it?

I guess there is always 2 sides of a coin..... Yeah not all maids are bad, but then again not all employers are inhumane.

Yes my friend, I know exactly what you mean.

My maid's contract states that she doesn't get a day off. However, I told her that if she wanted to have day offs just let me know and i'll accomodate.

But she declined.... So sometimes it's the maid that doesn't want days off. (could be because of the higher salary.... I'm paying mine $380 vs $320 for no days off)

    YES.

And she gets one off day every week + official holidays.

Why? Cos she is human and needs a break to recharge her batteries like everybody.

She is not serving jail time, it is only a work contract. Like the one the sg ppl hv.

For those who consider maids like a tool. Poor little thing you are, not being able to consider them as people and not being able to do even one day without them.

For me, her off day is also my off day. I take it easy at home and take care of MY kids, My responsibilities and MY problems.

She is a helper, a person, not a solution to all my needs.

After reading this threat, I will go and puke.

Another proof that sequestration of maid, leads to unbalanced behavior.

They turn like lions in cages.

Nevertheless, I have two little boys that need a good sexual education. Got the maid's number?

Like I said it's an example how things can turn out.
From your example, i can just say, just beware of strangers whom you do not know, even if they are Singaporeans.

Well... do you actually went to all the households and check on the maids? how do you know how they are treated are barbaric? Some maids even prefer not to go on off days. How many hours can we be bothering maids? 24 7? i don't think so. Afterall, most of us do work.
