at first u use ur newbie level cam to start off photography, then u realise that "oh man, the 3 fps cannot make it for wat i like to shoot. I need 10fps to shoot my kind of things!!!" or "oh man, my 6mp cam can only print till A4 size, i need a cam that can shoot A0 so i can photograph my family and paste on the living room wall"

look at these statements, it is easy to see that one can happily convert a want into a need and make it seem that there is really a need to get something.
saw some post from another thread. how conveniently from a point to justifying to buyup can become an option and not a priority when faced with a serious question.

    have to agree with you.
photography makes one sees things from all angles.

it's probably a mixture of both

most times, for non-professionals i think it'd be frankly, more of a want rather than need

yeah, well mr amateur_photographer you're right, it always sucks when you're always right

    read this

if there is no need to upgrade, then i think the camera companies would have realised that long ago. it isn't about the price, people still demand additional things.. some upgrade for the sake of upgrading, but not all do that

if you insist that nobody needs a mark d iii, that no one needs an l lens, that no one needs a nikon d3.. then go and live out your pipe dream too

gotta love ad hominem attacks, the only purpose they serve is to make people look silly on another note, i find it amusing that you make such strong statements when you have an extremely high volume of b&s threads ah, the irony of life

I think its more like when your camera starts growing some gray hair.

Ok just kidding. Seriously, outgrowing your camera body simply means you are craving for something new, shiny and more advanced. Normally at this stage for most hobbyist (I said most that means not all), lust overcomes common sense. By the time they their senses come back, their wallet is much lighter. The world works in funny ways. Hope that helps. Cheers!

So the necessity for a human to breathe to survive, is in itself, not a necessity, but a want?

For GWC, outgrow the camera body means XMM stop giving you the most attention during paid shoot.

    think about it this way:

We want to survive so we need air..

u see, everything in this world is derived from wants, not needs.

Actually most of the people are doing photography as hobby, so it is more of want than need..... that include myself.
Sometime want a new toy to pamper myself.

If you didn't know, the human body cannot suffocate itself, so survival is a human reflex, not rendered from a conscious desire to survive. Hence I would not go to the extent of making such a far-sighted sweeping statement to say that there is no such thing as a need, purely wants.

However, back to the topic of photography, I do believe that most hobbyists are into this because they want to. I doubt anybody NEEDS to have photography as a hobby, so likewise there is no absolute need to get that lens because I like to shoot birds. It comes back to desire; I like to shoot birds, so I have to get that lens to shoot birds. The pseudo-necessity is derived from a desire to shoot birds.

that may be, but i think it can be also mis-inform.

i mean, like some say need high burst rate to increase chances of getting candid shots or high burst rate is needed to shot sports etc. you know, basically advertisements that tells you more pixels = better photos, newer camera gives lower noise.....

if got time, pls read this

    http://llvj.com/reviews/film/iso100-400.shtml

    http://llvj.com/reviews/cameras/d30/d30_vs_film.shtml

and thats using d30 (not 30d) to compare against provia 100 and 400.

also, if dont pixel peep and only print 4r or 5r, heck even 8r (and how often do you guys print nowadays), can one really tell the difference between a photo taken by old d60 and the new 450d?

or just listen to what people tells you, 450d got better colors (which i agrees, but like i say, my family cant tell the difference and i dont pixel peep), so suddenly you feel your current camera is not up to standard?

i am just trying to understand what it means when people say they outgrow their eqpt here in cs. nobody can tell you that you are wrong in wanting to upgrade. if you feels happy after spending the money, why not.
