$600 per week? .... that's about the average for the seasoned newbies here ....
    always the Light, .... always.

$600 on what? Camera gear or film if you are using SLRs? $600 for a newbie on film and processing that is way too much but it could be done if you just started and have been at it a few months. To blow that on one month on films that is crazy....if you did, I hope you did learn much and made a better photographer out of yourself.

But if you meant $600 on camera gear and as quite a newbie photogapher with passion as you put it that is below average I think and if you compare yourself to other photographer who have been at it a long time, we are easily talking 5 figures...and I am not talking the low 10 or 20 thousands range either.

As a newbie, you CAN expect to spend tons or not spent much at all and still be a good (or great) phtographer...or you can become a camera gear collector like some folks we have here. The choice is always yours.

Big deal...my DSLR & kit lens cost more than that in 2005. My 18-200mm VR lens cost more than that.

Spending amount on your hobby depends on your budget. There are no such thing as need. They are just wants, as you don't depend on them for a living.

you should get out more often and shoot instead of shooting your mouth off in here. 600 is little to begin with already.

Is skill measured by how much I spend on photography?

Well put it this way, a D3 is $7200 and quite a few people have one of them, thats just the camera alone, and probably not even their first camera (in some cases)

my lst cam a kodak p&s (1st hand), already cost me $630 from HN.
    2nd cam a panny FZ5 (1st hand) cost me $660.
    3rd cam a d40 (2nd hand) cost $780.

photography is an expensive learning lesson

the early canon users would have beat your record by miles be it 1st hand or 2nd hand cause their cam bodies alone dont come cheap even at 2nd hand market rate.

My very first camera that my dad got me was a Yashica Electro 35 GSN, I managed to get a very mint one last year to keeps sake, in memory of it. I remember my dad showing me how to use the camera... like it was just yesterday.
