good stuff, and nice choice, but would it be possible not to chop off the tops of the buildings?

I am an amateur and have been trying to learn manual by myself. Usually when I try to adjust the settings to take night shots it just turns out blurry and with a lot of noise. Even when I use auto w/o flash as a last resort.

So its really impressive to an amateur like me. By the way what lens did you use?
Even my 10-20mm can't take shots that wide.

you need a tripod to take good night shots, reason being that the light is very low, to get a properly exposed photograph with reasonable depth of field and low levels of noise, you need to:

a) limit the iso used (100 or 200)
b) stop down to at least f/8, usually f/11 is better for most
c) exposure, depends on scene, any length from 2 seconds to 30 seconds is possible

when you adjust the settings to take your night shots it seems as if you are handholding a moderately long exposure (introducing handshake, hence the blur) with high iso value used. same for auto.

btw, i think the shot is a stitched together panorama - i.e. the threadstarter has taken a number of shots, and joined them together with software
