I took this long to implement in SG ?.

I would have thought the equipment that runs the GSM/3G mobile networks would have supported number portability 'out of the box' from the Factory.

Certainly it's been mandated by regulation in a number of countries for a number of years, so all the Telephone switch vendors (there arn't that many) would have sorted the back end implementation problems out ages ago.

Of course the Telephone companies them selves will not be so keen, reluctance to change phone number would keep a lot of people on 'bad plans' as switching carriers to a better one meant loss of phone number, force them to do full portability of number and suddenly they have to actually complete again...

What took them so long to implement? Lack of Competition?

True number portability has been a technology available for decades at other countries. Believe me, this had been the topic of discussion between a telco and IDA since 1998! What took them 10 years to implement it? hahaha. But to integrate with the three telcos, it probably took quite a fair bit of beating to make them link up.

And, dont get too happy yet. They have to make sure the billing system is seamless, cutting over from one telco to another. I can imagine the logistics at the backend is gonna be hell for the telcos at the initial stage. They have to have a clean workflow to map numbers out of one intelligent node to port these numbers to another telco's node. Hardwares dont usually fail. It's human errors that make life difficult for the front end, and that in turn can translates into frustrations for the uneventfull few.
