I posted my problem several weeks ago. D300 + AFS 70-200 and teleconverter. All of a sudden the autofocus died. Managed to change to another lens AFS 300 f/2.8 and luckily the auto focus came alive.
Now the camera works ok with 70-200 lens, but not sure how reliable it will be when needed in the future! |

Shot with a borrowed 70-200 once, encountered the same thing, the AF fail to engage.
Half-press or AF-on button won't trigger AF, got to go manual, turn the ring abit, then AF-ON. After a few shots, it dies off again..it was irritating.... |

my friend had similar problem with D300 & 70-200. AF failed to work. send to nsc and and reply from them is no fault found. but i think the contacts had been cleaned.
as for my d300 + 70-200, so far no prob with AF or any other faults. keeping my fingers crossed.

Another interesting thing I found out recently...
Shooting in Ch mode at 6fps, the shots' exposures are not consistent. I've checked that bracketing is off and was shooting in manual mode @ 1/250. The shots will appear alternate between half stop underexposure, normal and half stop overexposed. I do not know if this is normal...anyone had any encounters? |

I do not own a D300 but it sounds like the exposure compensation bracketing is turned on. Your camera setting might have been changed by now, go review EV values in the EXIF of the those shots, it may turn out to be a usage error.

For my case, no to both. WB was not auto too, it was set to tungsten. Maybe its the Matrix metering that is doing all this? ![]() |

Not many people having problems otherwise I would've been able to google it by now.

hmm....matrix metering? nope...in manual mode, metering doesn't play any part.
Bracketing off, Auto-ISO off, everything off, in Full manual.... newbie problem? no leh, i not newbie..haha..but maybe I noobie lah, if you like to call that. But seriously, the D300 is having some inconsistent behavior, sometimes excellent, sometimes abit weird, but rest assured its not cranky until cannot shoot, or poor performance, its just little nitty gritty irritating bits. I'm now thinking of whether to send in my camera to fix this motordrive/exposure problem... |

![]() Can you try the "Reset Custom Settings" and see if this problem still remains? I did a few shots indoors and it seems to be consistent now. ![]() |

Same here, tried a borrowed 70-200mm VR for some sports shooting, and half way through, the AF failed, turn off and on the camera a few times and it works....however, I have since purchased a brand new 70-200mm VR, till now no problem so far (keeping finger crossed) |

If everything manual still get inconsistence shots, the few other things left to check is the CMOS, the shutter curtain or the electronics. Time to send the cam to NSC. But before that, reexamine the exif data of those shots once more just to be sure. |

maybe the camera shutter needs calibration, throwing the camera in full force on the ground might solve the problem.
Kidding.... ![]() |
