Default Nikon D1 Battery Problem

Was wondering if anyone can advise on the below problem

Bought a set of D1 with 2 batteries from AXXX in Penisular.
Told me that he could not test it because the batteries are not charged up. With his assurance that the system is in working condition, I bought the set. Charged up the batteries and tested the set. Both batteries, when charged up, do not survive after 2 or 3 shots. Thought that the problem was due to life end of batteries and left it as it is. There was no need for me to use a digital as I usually shoot films. Recently, thinking that I would need to use the set, I bought a new battery from East Gear to try it on. To my surprise, the same problem happened even with new battery. Don't think I want to go back to AXXX for the problem as it has been sometime since I bought the camera from him, and looking at it, I think he knew the problem right from the start.

Well, the lesson to learn here is to test your set before making the deal , otherwise you will end up like me. Ok, problem aside, has anyone come across such problem with their camera set? What seems to be the problem? Besides Nikon, where can I send in for a reasonably priced check up? What is the likely repair costs like? Would be glad if you could share your experience here, thank-you,,,,,,,,,,,
