yes, the snowball effect will then be likely to be present there, but surely, to a smaller extent

for example, for your small scale sellers, like hawker centre vendors, they will kena from all their suppliers, so their overheads will increase, from the 5% gst incurred to 7% gst incurred, then they should pass it on.

it is actually the small scale sellers that are exploiting this the most, in actuality, from what i see in my life. the big companies, have not really jacked up their prices, only additional from gst.. the hawkers, some of them will raise by 50 cents, a much higher proportion than what a gst increase will cause.

but even then, people have the ability to choose, not all hawkers raise their prices, so if you got choice between one hawker who stays his price, versus one who jacks up his price.. well if you choose the latter you will have your reasons, won't you?

there are simplistic arguments against taxes and/or raising them which involve more abstract economic concepts like utility and consumer/producer surplus (also, very limited understanding of economics as of yet on my side), but i do not find them very applicable, a little too abstract.

oil and food.. known as commodities.. are not under the full power of governments.. but under market traders who buy and sell, and market forces like demand and supply... right now becos of Beijing Olympics, demand for raw materials are high... so prices will increase... i expect prices to fall after the games ended.

as for ERP... i had no comments about the fees, however till today i see no improvement to the increasingly congested expressways.. MRT even travelled faster than a cab during the peak hours... just imagine that.

rising affluence drives up demand, bringing supplies down. the more we spend on stuff more raw materials is used, not much is recycled locally. each time we move to new home, "upgrade" stuff, replace items that have short lifespan, resources are used.

the more we consume, the less we have.

I don't insist but the arguments have not yet convinced me. You said I shifted goalpost?

let me guess what you are saying is that because of higher utilities and other operating costs increase, the amount of GST has also increased proportionately, and consequently, the consumers are technically paying more now. You are not wrong here.
But you are totally wrong if you still insist that GST is a business cost, and that operating costs are directly due to GST. In fact, it is the other way round .....
When did I insist "GST is a business cost", there is a difference between increase in gst contributed to increase business cost and "GST is a business cost".

When did I say "operating cost are directly due to GST", there is difference between increase in utilities contributing to increased operating cost and "operating cost are directly due to GST"

I reproduce all the post to show you and you say I am uncanny? who shifted the goalpost you or me? Well, the posts are there for all to see.
