Default Novice nightshoot

Started night photo taking recently But can I get some help here? I tried to take the typical night scene but realised that I can't get the word "Marina Mandarin" in focus..without losing "brightness" of the photo (forgive me for my layman terms).I am using S5 and I think on that day, my focus was set to maximum and f =8( as stated in camera),shutter speed was slow though...but if I try to get the word in focus, then I start to lose a lot of details to darkness...how would you all take the shot if you were me??

Sorry, can't upload the photo, can only provide the link :P
