i would strongly recommend a dedicated macro lens
i started with 1, because i didnt noe much abt extension tubes, filters, etc and never regreted it. its the tamron 90 macro, cos i did have a budget of course, it will cost significantly more. but it will also produce much sharper pictures than filters and add-ons and it also works as well as, if not better than a normal prime lens. great focal length for portraits too |

For Canon lens pricing, can use this link as a reference:
http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showt...131801&page=36 Note that actual pricing may vary from that, so call the shops before buying. |

I think the EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro is the cheapest macro lens from Canon. It has a AFD motor though not USM so focussing will be quite audible and slower than USM. The tamron 90mm f/2.8 is another good macro lens with very good ratings about its image quality. Sad thing though, it's AF is noisy and not that fast. The barrel also extends by quite a bit when you are at the furthest focussing distance which makes it look like telephoto zoom
