I live in a condo and pay $26 a month no matter how many days in the month (last year was $25, the increase was at Nov/Dec month I think). I think its a lot of hard work walking the steps at 5am and deliver the paper...

Whatever you do, don't complain about these chaps! I used to deliver newspaper since I was a young kid to earn my own pocket money for school and to help with the family income. It's a hard life. Be it rain, illness, mood etc... no excuses, 365 days a year, you got to get up in unearthly hours to make a few bucks a day! Not to mention - its' a very "unglam" job. I was teased for many many years. But most of the bosses are actually quite well off. But to me, they deserve their rewards!

Yeah these guys are doing a great job. But I'd hope they wear some shoes instead of slippers or flip flops. Just imagine, I am awoken by their "piak piak piak" sound every morning at 5am when going down the stairs. This time of the morning is the best time to sleep!

OT abit. Then at 6am, my neighbour would then smoke in the common corridor (coz he's afraid of his daughters taking in 2nd hand cigarettes), and almost just in front of my windows. Again, I'm awoken by the smell of cigarettes at 6am!!! I'm going crazy at this rate...

    Sorry, slightly out of topic...

I don't understand why we have to pay extra for the newspaper delivery. In my country I pay less when the newspaper is to be delivered daily compared to buying from a news stand.

I hope that the answer is not "Because you need to pay someone to deliver it to your doorstep"

I guess because there might be other competing newspapers in the same area so they offer cheaper rates if you 'subscribe' to them?

I think they quoted the reasons for increase are higher patrol cost and difficult to hire ppl to do the work unless increase pay.

That was their classic answer, I agreed the petrol cost have increased. But after they increase the charges, the pay are not adjusted.

The delivery company sent us a letter to explain the intended reason to increase the service charge, I didnt read in the newspaper. I guess the delivery company does not belong to sph and hence they work on their own cost.

Are you also delivering papers? If so, ask the boss for a raise. If you're not then don't assume...

It is true. My old boss always ask me to resume delivery job to help him. He really need the help. And I still go back on temp/short term basis just to help him till he find people. BTW, have you ever compare newspaper size/weight between Singapore and others. For such a small country, our papers especially on Sat is HUGE and really HEAVY.

Almost all delivery companies that deliver papers to you are private company. These vendors have their own overhead. No help from SPH.

with the higher service charge, i am looking into if buying it off the newstand is viable too. for some, $1 more as claimed is 'nothing'. but, look it in totality, against the rising costs of energy(which impacts almost all spheres of life), foods, etc. last month, inflation 6%+.
